Brian's Winter is a novel by award winning writer Gary Paulsen. As a result of many letters sent to Mr. Paulsen by fans of Hatchet and The River, Mr. Paulsen writes this novel in which he pretends Brian is not rescued after fifty-four days lost in the woods with only a hatchet. Instead, Brian must face the winter alone. Brian discovers flint and makes arrowheads so he can kill larger prey, uses rabbit and moose skin to make himself warm clothing and even finds a way to make snowshoes so he will not sink in the snow while hunting. Brian's Winter is a "what if" scenario that takes a beloved character back to the woods and shows readers why he survives the woods in the first place.

Brian made his shelter better and fixed the damage the bear had done on the shelter. He also made an insulted door. Brian had a thousands of problems. Brian needed a stronger bow, and it had to be stiff so it would drive the arrows deeper. Brian had problems with the arrows. They were too thin and soft. Brian found out that he needed to make arrow heads. Brian awoke famished, and he only had four fish left.

All Brian could do at the end of the first day of rain was find dry wood for the fire. On the fourth day of rain, Brian found a four-pound Northern Pike on his fish line. Brian had made a weather tight shelter by watching the beavers make a watertight dam. Brian was thinking of the fire rock that was used to make the flint arrowhead.

Brian’s mother was calling him inside, but he couldn’t move. Brian realized he was dreaming and the moose was still on top of him. Then Brian moved away from under the moose. He got up and looked at the moose, and he decided to cut up the moose, for the meat. Finally at midnight, he stopped cutting up the meat and went to his shelter and fell asleep.

That night a front came in and the temperature rose, a welcome relief, to probably an even zero, and it snowed. This time it snowed close to six inches, and while that would not have been so bad in itself, it came on top of snow that was already there. In all, it added up to just under two feet of snow. Dark came suddenly at four in the afternoon, and he sat in the dark for a while. It broke when it hit the ground. There was game everywhere like rabbits and a buck with one antler.
He fixed his bow up a little bit and took off his mittens before shooting. He took a shot… and pro hunters would have called it a perfect kill but to Brian it felt like murder. Brian felt awful. He wanted to miss, but for him to live something must die. It was cold.
