There are so many different ways students can "do" things with chromosomes - both online and in-person - to understand how they are studied and viewed by scientists to understand genetics and disease. I particularly like the white board activity of matching homologous chromosomes. This is like a game for students but also one in which they can work with others and think critically. They can also determine male/female and if there are any abnormalities.

If there isn't a mutual respect, there won't be a productive classroom. Establishing that relationship may not be easy, but one way we can do this is taking a few minutes each day to talk about a topic that interests your student(s).

The 3 C's is something I hope to conquer in the classroom. The first C represents a connection to your students. A teacher should always know their audience and get to know their students. This will not only help stimulate motivation for students to learn but will help allow the teacher to understand what works best for the learners. Consistency is the second C and key element to ensuring that students have a routine in place and are prepared for each lesson. Students benefit from knowing the concepts of the classroom schedule and from understanding what is expected of them. Compassion is the third C, which is to instill compassion towards others with respect in the classroom. This is something that is extremely important for students to practice in the classroom. Emphasizing compassion is a great way to allow students to recognize how their actions affect others and to be understanding of peers.

This article gives a list of 12 Proven Classroom Management tips. They include 2 tips about establishing logical classroom rules and consequences, using positive language, having students be responsible for their own learning environments and efforts, being mindful of those who need extra help and those who need extra work, and several more very effective management tips. I recommend reading this article. I would use all the tips and I especially liked that they did not focus on rewarding kids for behavior but rather modeling good behaviors and expecting kids to be accountable for doing it because it is the right thing to do. That's how I would use them all in my future classroom.

This photo shows an example of several different maker space creations that were included in this article. The person who wrote the article visited several different schools and blogged about the maker space experiences they had set up. The article gives a wealth of information on the many elements of the maker space like organization of materials, brainstorming spaces to discuss ideas, and ways of displaying maker space projects. Sounds like such a great idea to allow for inventive creativity with your students. Included a large array of photos too!! I would definitely use some of the ideas in my room like using clear bins to organize materials and label them and creating a comfy space for "Thinking"

One of my favorite aspects of classroom management is routine and consistency. One way to ensure that students have consistency during their science lessons is through anchor charts. Anchor charts help to establish relevant strategies to utilize during their science lessons. You can create these on your own or co-author them with the help of your students. For example if you want to create a "Lab Safety" anchor chart, you may ask your students to describe rules they think would implemented in a "lab" setting.

Click here for an article on introducing science in the classroom.

Maker space stations can be implemented to allow students to immerse themselves into the 5 E's of science where the students are provided opportunities for hands-on learning. Students can actively engage in their work in these stations. I would specifically like to design this maker space to be available for students to have a designated schedule where the students would be participating in group activities to tackle a stem project. An example of an activity that could be implemented is for students to build a recycled robot using only recycled materials and copper tape, and batteries. The maker space would have all the materials necessary, as well as directions. The students would then use the 5 E's to facilitate their learning process here.

Sciencebuddies.org has a plethora of STEAM activities that would be easy to implement in the classroom. I specifically chose this one as it appeared to have the supplies most teachers would already have. Additionally, I know that when I was a student I would've really enjoyed making my own harmonica. While having fun creating this, I'd simultaneously be learning about the difference between longitudinal and transverse waves. Concepts that seems very difficult for an elementary school student. However, when you're having fun and building while learning, the concepts come to you more easily.

As a motivation, an interactive board designated for "burning questions" can be a place where students can identify any questions they may have about a lesson or about a science assignment. This is a fantastic idea to allow students who are on the shyer side to ask questions, or to participate in a thinking routine where the students have to come up with a question about the topic, for example, the sheet posted identifies matter as the lesson. Students would have to ask a question about the science topic matter that they would want to answer in today's lesson. It is a super engaging and fun way to have kids participate in the lesson.
