Science fiction is fictional stories involving scientific element, and arguably, a fantasy element as well. I argue fantasy since at times there are very impossible elements. Like shape shifting. Though, of course, that can be argued. Eons ago, space travel likely sounded impossible. And of course, nowadays, its becoming more and more of a possibility.

Sort of! Science fiction is stories focusing on the concept of advancements or recessions in technology, stories that challenge us as a society and our creations, and make us question the way we view things.

[I know I didn't have to do this one, but I kinda wanted this all to look full and organized, so, uh, yay.]

Yes, actually! It inspires us a society to do better, to create more, and warns us of potential threats, whether they be physical or mental. When I say create, I also mean create solutions to some of the problems! As previously mentioned, it also challenges us morally! In example, the Star Trek kiss thing! Or, more realistically speaking, the genuine view that just because we look different, almost like aliens to one another, we are the same blood and organ flesh bags.

The whole 'Sci-fi paves our future' argument. After further thinking about it, it truly does. The concept of phones came from science fiction. The concept of flying transportation came from science fiction. All of these were not only predictions, but blue prints in a sense. Concepts that we took to create. We as a society have been able to advance because of the concepts these stories give us, whether they are bad or good.

The benefits of scientific progress truly depends on what we are progressing in. And technically, so does the negatives. To progress scientifically, is to improve our way of living or doing things. So something like a phone is progress, but also something like a bulldozer is as well.

The negatives usually involve when someone dies as a result of trying to make an advancement happen. Or when the advancement involves something deadly.

Probably electricity/Lightbulb. Its not necessarily just those things, but the history behind it, and how we credit Edison for it. It's truly a sad tale if you ever go and read the whole thing. I cannot fathom being a creator of something so spectacular, only to die destitute in some low hotel. But I am also thankful for the creations itself. Without it, we'd all be in early Victorian England style living.

We need electricity, plain and simple. It powers our devices, but also powers some of the machines that keep us alive in hospitals. For some people, us having electricity is a way to survive.

The negatives are simply fire, shocks, and it powers the same devices we are obsessed with to the point where some people may consider it a 'problem'.

Thats a complicated question. On one hand, I don't like the concept of war. Its upsetting. But I know wars can have a noble cause. Like when we defeated the Nazis, and saved countless of lives during the holocaust. We want to be one step ahead of an enemy, but at the same time, must violence always be our answers? Technology would push forward this idea of violence. Which can benefit us. But ruin the world in the process.

Another complicated question. Immoral experimentation could throw us forward in the scientific field but why should innocent people suffer? We should avoid "bad" experimentation, ones that hurt people. The exception should be rapists, especially child rapists, and other heinous crimes. We should have no limits with such people. As long as we know for a fact they did the crime, of course. But besides that instance, we should try steering clear of causing pain to human beings.

There are many benefits to AI being intellectually superior to mankind. For starters, it can likely teach. It can withstand dangerous jobs. It can help us advance medically. It can help us advance in engineering, and help is technological wise. It could help the disabled, and who knows, maybe even find cures to some of our human diseases. And perhaps, we can return the favor, teaching it how to deal with its emotions, and newfound intelligence.

I'm not sure how to explain it, but replacing a body part, even when not injured could be of interest to some people. If I were told, "We are gonna take your arm, and in return you get this much cooler arm that can lift virtually anything." I'd have to consider. I would assume the process would be much cleaner in a medical setting. So yeah. Arms/hands that can do more than what we have now. It would likely make an increase in crime, but hey, lifting stuff can be a genuine struggle. Besides, i'm sure the prosthetics could have other uses as well.

As much as I like Star Trek more, I do believe Space 1999 might have more of a realistic tone. The only thing i'd add onto Space 1999 would be a grosser more rusty aesthetic, since I still do believe space would just be as bad as we have it here on Earth. Humans are not necessarily known for their cleanness. Nor are we known for getting along so well.

Also the tech in Star Trek seems so advanced, it'd probably take longer to get there with the whole transportalizer type thing.

For one, i'm pretty sure you gotta be connected to the force to really be a cool jedi with a lightsaber, which I know I would 100% be the lame side character that probably dies within the first episode lolol. Blasters seem more effective anyways. Longer range/distance, can always smack someone with the blaster itself, probably easier to hide. That last point can be argued since the sabers can become small, but my point still stands lol.

Most depictions of aliens are creatures that are far more advanced than us, which makes for a good reason to be afraid, but that is merely speculation. Maybe they're just on the same page we are, and we're overthinking it. Maybe they're only slightly more advanced. We really cant be making too many assumptions.

The concept of groundhog day and the ties between schizophrenia and time travel, if thought about hard enough.

Groundhog day is the concept in which you wake up in the same day over and over again. I guess it struck me as interesting, since as someone who's been diagnosed with mental illness, I often feel that way. I resonate with the line, "Everyday is the same." In the movie shown in the documentary, the man's torment cycle is only ever broken when the man changes his ways, and becomes more considerate. And that's very interesting to me.

In the media "The time travelers wife", it almost seems like theres an undertone of mental illness problems. Specifically, schizophrenia. Often times, seeing someone you love suffering through some sort of tormenting delusion hurts. The traveler's wife goes through obvious emotional pain when her husband disappears, which parallels that of a person watching their partner disappear into delusion and agony.

Like, don't get me wrong, many historical tragedies could be avoided, but like, I think things that happened made us what we are. If it isn't, I'd go back and fix a few of my mistakes, maybe even help myself out with choices. I know i've said in a previous entry that that is the reason why we shouldn't time travel, but I mean, I never said I was impervious to the selfishness the rest of humans posses.

I think anyone could try to create a Utopia. Really, its been braindead people who've tried thus far if you think about Hitler. And any other moronic fictional character whos tried to start a Utopia. Their emotional intelligence is beyond dead, usually. In order to even remotely create a semi functioning Utopia, you need a group of people who specialize in different intelligence. Like emotional, spatial, logical, etc.

Dystopia for sure. With nothing to regulate the corporations, every possible resource we have on this planet by nature would be used up. We'd be left with nothing but our own misery, and bought happiness. Sure, the economy would be booming, but these companies do not actually care for anyone. We are all replaceable. We are not worth anything in this life or the next. We are just herd.

12/8/21 [Reflection] Soyent Green takes place in 2022. That's next year. How close are we to the world it shows? Why?

Not quite there yet, but its a possibility I suppose. We are currently STARTING to suffer from more population issues. And we are indeed polluting the Earth, and climate change is a thing, but like, I guess we haven't gotten to the extreme like in the movie. If I had to give an estimate as to when we would get to this point, it might be a few more 100 perhaps? I mean, if youre a hopeful person, perhaps you'll hope someone does something about it by then. And if youre a pessimist, maybe you'll just accept the fact people suck, and lay back down, accepting thine fate.

12/9/21 [Bellringer] Does technology lead us closer to a Dystopia or a Utopia? Explain

I believe that it depends in who's hands it falls into. Either way, a utopia is not possible. It would eventually become corrupted, but perhaps, the original intention, plus the beginning actions may be good. After some time though, it is inevitable that it would all hit the fan. Many films that we have seen with Newtopias often involve advanced technology.

Definitely Soylent Green. Overpopulation, shortages, the taking of rights. All are very possible. To be fair, overpopulation is already happening. And then theres just the whole climate change stuff. Which is also happening as we speak. Imagine a world where you gotta live on the stairs/hallway of an apartment complex. Not to mention you're also being fed dead people.

This class has been hella rad, and I'm glad I took it. Originally, I was set to take a nursing class, but I couldn't figure out how to drive and stuff, so I asked to be removed. I was hoping to maybe get into horror literature, but they placed me here since it was the only other thing open. I'm glad they did. I never paid much mind to sci-fi, and as a result, never really cared for it. But this class has given me a new view on stuff. And also has had me unleash my ultimate cynicism, but that's alright lol. Anyways, thank you for reading my weird pessimism rambles, and other weird insights I may have.
