If you have questions, please contact the person specified in the post rather than our team. Those posting opportunities, please see the guideline information: https://bham.padlet.org/cdtgillett/breakout-room/65XOvBOmbeG94GBQ-89peXkjR79dJzAYl

Maternity Safety – seeking additional women to support research

The Midlands Patient Safety Research Collaboration ‘Maternity Safety’ theme is looking for some new members to join their existing PPIE advisory group. Research topic areas include the use of clinical support decision making tools (such as apps) in maternity care and how to best communicate maternity care risks in pregnancy. Mental health care during maternity is also a key area. If this sounds of interest and you have experience of maternity care, get in touch to find out more about the role! You would need to feel comfortable sharing your perspectives on maternity care with researchers and doctors and in providing feedback on written documents, videos and other activities. Meetings are sometimes in person in Birmingham, sometimes online approximately 4 times a year. They usually take place on weekdays sometime between 10am-3pm. Occasionally meetings take place in London, travel costs will be covered. You will be paid for any involvement meetings and preparation required. The exact payment on offer will be confirmed with you before each meeting, but it is typically £25 per hour (1-2 hrs) or £75 for a half day (3-4 hours), plus travel. Please contact us on patientsandpublic@contacts.bham.ac.uk. We will keep this opportunity open until all places are filled, but get in touch early to avoid disappointment.

I am planning a study to understand changes in heart and metabolic health during the first year after birth among women who had gestational diabetes. I want to map changes like blood sugar, blood pressure, weight, sleep and activity. My goal is to identify early warning signs, understand which clinical factors matter most, and test whether combining them with genetics—many small DNA differences that together can influence health—can give a clearer picture of future risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Before I finalise the design, I want to co-design it with people who have had gestational diabetes. I would like to hear what measurements feel reasonable, how often check-ins should be, what information you would want back, and any barriers we should remove. This is a one-off online conversation (or two, if you wish) to guide the plan; there are no tests and you can skip any topic you don’t want to discuss. Your insights will help me build a study that’s respectful, low-burden and focused on outcomes that matter.

I will reimburse your time at £25 per hour in vouchers as a thank-you for sharing your experience.

Interested?

To Be Seen - an Exhibition and Workshop by DANIELLE RADWAY

I’m also super excited to let you know about the upcoming solo exhibition of our very own Danielle Radway! Dani is a member of The Hildas and we have worked together on a number of creative projects in the past, including Sci-Art Perspectives (2025) and Lore + (Dis)order (2022).

We are looking for a small group of Hildas members to join an online discussion group on Friday 8th May at 12-1pm. This is to gather feedback on a new research proposal being developed to explore how sleep might be improved during menopause. As such, the researchers involved are particularly interested in members who have experience with menopause either directly or through supporting other women going through menopause (their mums, for example). They are also keen to hear minority ethnic perspectives on how they can improve acceptability of their research plans and the recruitment strategy of women from these communities to ensure the research is more inclusive. If these are areas you are passionate about and can support with, please fill the expression of interest form before the 24th April: https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/bham/menopause-and-sleep-ppie-discussion

The team can offer a £25 Amazon e-voucher as a thank you for your time and involvement.

Ideally you should feel able to explain to visitors about your own involvement experiences, and talk to visitors about what public involvement in research is all about. Payment and travel expenses are on offer, depending on how many hours between 12-5pm you can support for (We normally pay £27.50per hour).
