How does a country join the UN?
Answer: According to the Charter of the United Nations, “is open to all peace-loving States that accept the obligations contained in the United Nations Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, are able to carry out these obligations”. This means that every single country can join this organization although they have to be committed, and have to follow the orders. Even though every country can be part the United Nations, they have to fill out a form, which is the considered by the Security Council, and also has to have a vote of 9/15 from the main countries in the United Nations.
http://www.un.org/en/sections/member-states/about-un-membership/index.html

In what ways is the United Nations similar and different to the League of Nations?

Answer: A major difference with the UN is that it was made during the time of war, while the League of Nations was made after the war. The League was also part of the treaty between Germany and the other countries, while the UN was a completely separate legal instrument. The League also allowed for a country to start a war if it was approved by the League's members, while the UN allows no acts of aggression. Each country of the league also had the power of veto, while the UN only gives the power to the security council. The league was also only for disputes between countries, while the UN has a far wider scope addressing issues about dirty water, lack of food, poverty and other global issues not to do directly with war.
http://www.nationsencyclopedia.com/United-Nations/Comparison-with-the-League-of-Nations-THE-UN-S-GREATER-SCOPE.html

How does the UN still work to maintain world peace and avoid wars?

The United Nations came into being in 1945, following the devastation of the Second World War, with one central mission: the maintenance of international peace and security. The UN does this by working to prevent conflict; helping parties in conflict make peace; peacekeeping; and creating the conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish. These activities often overlap and should reinforce one another, to be effective. The UN Security Council has the primary responsibility for international peace and security. The General Assembly and the Secretary-General play major, important, and complementary roles, along with other UN offices and bodies. http://www.un.org/en/sections/what-we-do/maintain-international-peace-and-security/
