Even though I am an inuk, I never had the experience in lighting a Qulliq until Aaju brought up the lighting of Qulliq in class. Lighting and tending the Qulliq made me feel so powerful and connected to our ancestors although we didn’t do it the proper way that our ancestors used to.

It makes me feel like a real Inuk when lighting up a qulliq, I was so proud when I lid a qulliq for the first time. Made me want to own one. The smell of the qulliq was amazing. It was so interesting to learn how to light a qulliq, next time I’ll know how to light a qulliq again.

when i was learning how to tend (light) the Qulliq, i felt very proud as it was my first time lighting one, I don’t remember every step on how to turn it on but i know that we would need seal fat or an oil from the store if there isnt any animal fat we can use, maniq? A wood/stick to spread the oil and the maniq around, and a lighter or a match to turn the Qulliq on. It connects to me because before our generation was born, they would use it mostly for heating, cooking and drying because there was no electricity to use. But we should also carry it on so it still can be used if needed when being out on the land or even at home when theres a power outages.

Tending the qulliq has connected me with myself because it is our culture since the beginning of life in Inuit history. It calm me down because it is our light and a way home to ourself. Using the qulliq helps us cook with food and warmth.

It was my first time lighting a qulliq when aaju peters bought her qulliq to the class room, when i lighting a qulliq i felt like i was powerful and i felt the inukness in me. The smell of the qulliq is the best smell i know. It was the best experience in my life.

Tending the qulliq lighting was my first time doing the lighting and i felt like my inukness was coming out of the surface lol i felt warm and connected to my culture and i felt like my grandma was next to me while i was lighting the qulliq. My grandmother Leah Atagoojuk was lighting on qulliq on Nunavut day back in 1999 on the signing of the agreement. I miss her dearly.
