         <title>critical literacy </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>"Setting also plays an important role in adopting critical literacy teaching practices" (Beck, 2005, p.5). </strong></p><p><br></p><p><strong>Thinking with the idea:</strong></p><p>This quote reminds me that teaching doesn't happen in just any context matter. When thinking with cultural literacy, I realized that understanding the broader social, cultural, and political setting of a school or community is essential. A culturally literate teacher doesn’t just know about different cultures; they also pay attention to how culture and power show up in different classrooms and communities. In terms of cultural youth practices, this quote reinforces that the youth themselves are shaped by their setting. What might resonate with students in an urban school may not land the same way in a rural or suburban classroom. </p><p><br></p><p>I'm noticing that effective critical literacy work can't be copied and pasted from one classroom to another. If we ignore settings, we risk being tone deaf or missing out on what truly matters to students. This idea is significant because, to me as a person and educator, it challenges me to be more reflective and responsive. It is not enough to have good intentions, as those things must be conscious in the realities of my students' lives and communities. </p><p><br></p><p><br></p><p><strong>Applications to teaching:</strong></p><p>This would factor into my own teaching by, in any new teaching setting, I would start by learning about the community. I can do this by talking with students, families, and local educators before assuming what critical literacy should look like. I can also build units and texts that reflect not only student identities but the specific issues and interests tied to them. Making word problems that reflect their own life can boost their engagement. </p><p><br></p><p>In my field placement in a high school pre-calculus class, most of the instruction is focused heavily on procedural number problems. for example, solving questions, graphing functions, and working through identities. These skills are important, but the lesson often feels disconnected from the students' real lives and interests. If I were teaching the class, I would bring in real-world, culturally relevant applications of math concepts. By shifting the problems with context that reflect the students' committees or interests, it could bring the tone of the class from just numbers to meaningful problem-solving. </p><p><br></p><p><br></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>"We need to shift the conversation in teacher education away from the achievement gap" (Gutierrez, 2009, p.12). </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Thinking with the idea:</strong></p><p>This quote pushes me to question how the idea of an achievement is used in math education. In high school math, especially, there is a frame to students who struggle with abstract concepts or standardized tests as behind or deficient. This deficit-based thinking often overlooks the ways that math curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices have historically excluded and underserved students of color, bilingual learners, and working-class youth. Through a cultural literacy lens, it becomes clear that what is considered mathematical knowledge is often defined around ideas and abstract reasoning that feel disconnected from the real world. Shifting awareness from the achievement gap means interrogating whose knowledge counts in math and expanding the way students are invited to engage with the subject. Through a cultural youth perspective, this also means recognizing that students who struggle in math are not just academic, they're social and cultural. Students bring mathematical reasoning from their everyday lives, which is often overlooked. </p><p><br/></p><p>I'm noticing how deeply rooted deficit thinking is in math education. phrases like they are just not good at math or these students are below grade level come up often. These statements carry assumptions that place blame on students instead of examining whether the curriculum connects to their lived experiences or whether they have had opportunities to access the material equitably. This is significant for me as a future math educator because it forces me to reflect on my own biases and how I measure success. It challenges me to rethink how I design math instruction and how I talk about student progress. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Application to teaching:</strong></p><p>These factors into my own teaching by I would in my high school math class introduce students to the idea that disparities in achievement are not just about effort or ability, by they reflect years of unequal access to resources and opportunities. When analyzing real-world data, I would model how to ask questions like why are these numbers unequal, or what historical or structural reason might explain this. In my field placement class, they focused almost entirely on number problems like solving trig identities. When the teacher discussed students' performance, they often label students as behind or not ready for advanced math without considering how the curriculum might not be connecting to students' experiences or learning styles. If I were the teacher, I would push us to as students are struggling because lack of understanding or because the way we are teaching doesn't reflect their strengths. </p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

When I think about cultural literacy and culturally youth approaches in light of this, it pushes me to examine how dominant the narratives about adolescent development can shape educators' expectations and interactions with students, often in limiting or negative ways. </p><p><br/></p><p>I'm noticing that deficit-based views, like assuming teenage brains are inherently risky or underdeveloped, can overshadow the rich cultural knowledge, creativity, and resilience that youth bring. This is significant to me because it exposes the risk of labeling students rather than recognizing their strengths and potential. It reminds me that cultural literacy and cultural youth require actively countering these negative stereotypes and advocating for more asset-based views of young people. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Application to teaching:</strong></p><p>These factors into my own teaching by I can actively work to reject deficit narratives about students' mathematical ability and development. Rather than assuming some students just aren't math people or blaming lack of engagement on typical teenage behavior, I would emphasize students' strengths, ways of thinking, and voices, even if they don't fit traditional models of success in math. I can also create a math learning environment that honors a diverse way of reasoning and problem solving by moving beyond rigid expectations about how math should be done. In my field placement, I noticed that students who struggle with procedural fluency were often assumed to be less capable or less focused. There was little exploration of why students might be disengaged or how the material could be presented differently. This quote reminds me to push past simplified ideas about the teenage brain and instead consider students' full context by what motivates them, challenges they face, and how they best learn. </p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

(Petrone, 2015, p.3). </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Thinking with the idea:</strong></p><p>This quote pushes me to reconsider how cultural literacy and culturally youth practices must actively challenge stereotypical or deficit-based narratives about adolescents. Often in society and education, it portrays adolescents through a narrow, dominant lens, like seeing youth as rebellious or lazy. To think with cultural literacy and cultural youth means to question these generalized labels and seek a deeper, more understanding of youth that honors their cultural, social, and individual complexities. </p><p><br/></p><p>I'm noticing how powerful it is to disrupt these dominant ideas because it opens up space for youth to be seen as capable, resourceful, and diverse in their ways of being. This is significant for me as a person and educator because it reminds me not to reduce students to stereotypes but to approach them with curiosity and respect. It also highlights the importance of listening to youth voices and recognizing their perspectives as valid and essential. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Application to teaching:</strong></p><p>These factors into my own teaching by making sure to create a classroom that is a culture where students are not boxed into limiting ideas about who they should be. Instead, encourage them to explore and express their identities fully and critically. I would also incorporate math problems and discussions that challenge stereotypes about adolescence and intelligence by showing students they can be creative, critical, and powerful thinkers in a math space. In my field placement, the class focuses on solving number-based problems. I noticed that students who didn't grasp the concepts were often written off as not math-minded, which limited their confidence and participation. This quote reminds me to push back on narrow views of what math ability looks like and create a space for all students to engage in meaningful learning. I can use reflective questions to connect math learning to students ' self-understanding. I can use questions like What does being good at math mean to you or Have you ever felt misunderstood in a math class. These questions invite students to examine their own relationship with math and challenge the assumptions others may have about them. </p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>"Engaging readers through the use of a critical literacy lens not only helps students disrupt the commonplace or interrogate multiple viewpoints, it also helps them pay close attention to texts" (Papola-Ellis, 2015, p.3). </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Thinking with the idea:</strong></p><p>When I think about critical literacy approaches in relation to the quote, it highlights the power of critical literacy to deepen students' engagement. not just on the surface level but in a way that challenges the narratives and centers multiple perspectives. Cultural literacy is about understanding the cultural contexts behind texts and recognizing whose voices are prioritized or silenced. This quote emphasizes that a critical literacy lens encourages students to actively question these acts instead of passively accepting the common place of a story. From a culturally youth perspective, this critical engagement must connect to students' lived experiences and cultural identities. When students see their own realities reflected in texts, they will become more motivated and thoughtful readers. </p><p><br/></p><p>I'm noticing that critical literacy practices create opportunities for students to develop critical thinking and analytical skills while also fostering a sense of agency. It pushes me to think about how texts are not neutral but embedded with power relationships. This is significant because it transforms reading from a passive activity into an active process. It aligns with my personal and professional commitment to equality and justice in education. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>Application to teaching:</strong></p><p>These actors into my own teaching by finding ways to bring critical thinking into traditional math instruction by asking, Why does this formula matter, or Where did it come from. Even if the content is numbers-based, we can still prompt students to consider how math shapes decisions in economics, technology, and policy. I can also encourage students to ask their own questions about the world that we could explore using math. For example, asking how fast a video goes viral or what the relationship is between hours worked and income in our area. This brings cultural youth practices into a space that is often seen as neutral or detached from identity.</p><p><br/></p><p>In my field placement, the pre-calculus class was very procedural with little discussion of why math mattered beyond the test. I noticed that some students were disengaged, most likely because they didn’t see how the content connected to their lives. If I were teaching, I would start small by reframing a word problem to reflect their interest. Over time, I can build bigger questions that encourage them to see math as a tool to understand the world, not just a set of rules to memorize.</p>]]></description>
