To start add sugar, cocoa ,salt, and water in a saucepan that's medium size 
2.  Stir constantly on medium heat until the mixture boils . Keep stirring constantly for about 1 minute. 
3. Keep stirring and add the 4 cups of milk. Heat but do not boil. 
4. Remove from heat and add the 1 teaspoon of  vanilla extract  and stir very well. 
5. Add whipped cream, candy canes, and chocolate if wanted
6. Serve it and Enjoy
