"The Great Gatsby" written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, takes place in the 1920's, before the Great Depression. It's filled with parties and lights and all the things that embody that era. Art Deco truly seems to come alive in this book. Flappers, architecture, speakeasies, jazzclubs, mobsters, etc can all be found in this book. We especially get a good look into Art Deco through Gatsby's house and parties. This book is one of the many things that has kept the art deco movement alive since then.

This painting, Portrait of Marquis D'afflito, was painted by Tamara De Lempicka in 1925. Art Deco was based off a symmetrical, rectilinear style, which you can clearly detect in Tamara's works. She painted everything, and went everywhere. She was born in Poland, went to school in Switzerland, vacationed and was married in St. Petersburg (Russia), eloped to Paris, France, moved to Hollywood,USA, and lived out the remainder of her life in Mexico.

Art Deco is an art movement that began in 1920 and lasted until the Great Depression began in the 30’s, although the style has lived on and is still reminiscent today. It represented wealth, luxury, glamour, and faith in social/technological progress. It was a mixture of many other styles, in a desire to be modern. The style of itself was defined by it’s sleek and refined edges, and its smooth polished surfaces. Art Deco was bold and sharp, built off angles and contrasting colors. The movement began in France, right before World War I began. It’s name is short for Arts Decoratifs, from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925. However, the style started to die out nearing the 1930’s, as the Great Depression approached. New materials arrived, including chrome plating, stainless steel, and plastic. From these new materials a new form of Art Deco was born, known as Streamline Moderne. It was called this due to it’s featured curving forms and smooth, polished surfaces.

The Idea of Art Deco was based off the feeling of luxury, freedom, glamour, and having a fun time. The 20’s were a time for experimentation and everything was lit up. Some of the biggest influences that are still around today are the Chrysler Building, The Empire State Building, and the award-winning novel The Great Gatsby. The Architecture style of the Art Deco era seems to be re-emerging today in some of the interior, and exterior, design. The whole idea of art deco was of a modern style. It was a highly influential style, it truly embodies the entirety of the 20’s. When you think of that time era, you think lights, parties, flappers, music, nights out on the town. All of those things include art in some shape or form. It broke away from past art movements that were based off of political or philosophical roots, and was purely decorative. It also differed in the fact that it leaned more towards a futuristic look.
