Personal reflection: From the cross-pollination of diverse ideas, what key takeaways on our evolving national identity resonate or conflict with your personal values and beliefs?

From the cross-pollination of diverse ideas, one key takeaway that resonates with me is Singapore’s ability to embrace multiculturalism while still striving for unity. I value inclusiveness and mutual respect, so seeing different cultures coexist and influence one another — whether through food, language, or shared traditions — aligns with my personal belief that diversity strengthens a nation. However, I do sometimes feel conflicted when meritocracy is applied unevenly, and certain groups still face stereotypes or systemic bias. This challenges my values of fairness and equality, reminding me that our national identity is still a work in progress.

A piece of advice on how to maintain resilience and thrive.

3. A suggestion for fostering inclusivity and nation-building.

Answer: Dear Future Citizen of Singapore, one key takeaway from this module is that resilience is not just about bouncing back. It’s about growing stronger through challenges. Singapore has shown this by adapting to climate threats while planning for a sustainable future. My advice to you is this: stay curious, stay grounded, and don’t be afraid to adapt. Change will come, embrace it with a steady mind and an open heart. To foster inclusivity and build our nation stronger, listen more, judge less. Everyone has a story, and it’s through understanding and empathy that true unity is built. Wishing you courage and compassion,

Amirul Aqmal

Volunteering for causes such as environmental clean-ups, elderly care, or youth mentorship builds a stronger, more caring society. People can also support ground-up initiatives or student-led projects that tackle real social issues like inclusivity or sustainability. Staying informed through local news and contributing respectful feedback via platforms like OneService or REACH allows citizens to voice concerns and suggest improvements. These small but meaningful actions help build a more united, forward-looking Singapore.

This means maintaining strong international relationships through diplomacy and trade, while also upholding values like multiculturalism, innovation, and sustainability. Singapore must invest in education and technology to stay competitive, and actively contribute to solving global challenges such as climate change, digital transformation, and public health. At the same time, promoting social harmony and unity within the country ensures stability and resilience. By balancing global engagement with strong national identity, Singapore can continue to grow and play a meaningful role on the world stage.

In Week 9, we discussed what it takes for a country like Singapore to thrive as part of the global community. I learned that Singapore’s success depends on staying connected through strong international relationships, trade, and diplomacy. It also requires constant innovation, adaptability, and investment in areas like education and sustainability. Most importantly, Singapore must continue to maintain social harmony while contributing to global issues such as climate change and public health. The lesson helped me realise that global relevance is not just about size, but about being smart, responsible, and future-ready.

In Week 11, we explored the topic of whether land-constrained cities like Singapore should prioritise underground infrastructure over vertical skyscrapers. Through the debate, I gained a deeper understanding of both sides. The pro team highlighted how underground infrastructure can save surface space, improve climate resilience, and offer long-term planning flexibility. Meanwhile, the con team raised valid concerns about high costs, safety, and psychological impacts of underground living. This debate helped me see that while underground development has strong potential, it should complement—not fully replace vertical solutions. A balanced approach is key for future urban planning in cities like Singapore.

Conclusion Paragraph – Singapore, the World and I

Thirteen weeks have passed by so quickly in this module, Singapore, the World and I. Throughout this journey, I’ve gained valuable insights into the social and political issues that shape Singapore and its place in the global community. The lessons challenged me to think critically about topics such as governance, identity, sustainability, and the role we play as active citizens. I’ve come to realise that nation-building is not just the work of leaders, but also the responsibility of everyday people like us. Thank you, Ms Diana, for your patience, guidance, and for making this learning experience meaningful and engaging.
