"One of the unsettling things about my journey, mentally, physically, and emotionally, was that I wasn't sure when or where it was going to end. I didn't know what I was going to do with my life. I felt that I was starting over and over again." (Beah 69)

- Ishmael's journey in life was formed by the damage done by the rebels and terrorism to his country. He was a victim of violence and didn't know when it was going to end. When he states "I felt that I was starting over and over again" shows that he is having the same things reoccurring in his life which is causing suffering.

"Sometimes we were asked to leave for war in the middle of a movie. We would come back hours later after killing many people and continue the movie as if we had just returned from intermission. We were always either at the front lines, watching a war movie, or doing drugs. There was no time to be alone or to think." (Beah 124)

- Being a child and having to go through these things could be very challenging. Just imagine watching a movie then pausing it to go out and kill people then continue on with your daily life. He explains how they "always either at the front lines, watching a war movie, or doing drugs. There was no time to be alone or to think." The theme of suffering may not be directly stated, but thinking of the situation they are in they are suffering mentally by the traumatic events they go through in there life.

"Whenever I looked at rebels during raids, I got angrier, because they looked like the rebels who played cards in the ruins of the village where I had lost my family. So when the lieutenant gave orders, I shot as many as I could, but I didn't feel any better." (Beah 122)

- Ishmael took his anger that he felt after his family was killed by the rebels and killed them, but he felt no better. Obviously there was suffering going on at this time as when he would see the rebels it would remind him of the time they killed his family and can feel the pain he felt back at that time.

It will protect you and provide you all you need, if you know how to use it well." (Beah 124)

- Violence was a huge factor in the country at this time. This quote shows that there was so much violence just to go out in public you needed a gun to keep yourself safe. That was a big problem because most people had no way of getting a gun so they had no way to protect themselves.

Ishmael even at a young age displayed violence by killing the rebels when he states, "I shot as many as I could". He displayed this sort of violence as revenge to the rebels that destroyed his city, killed his family and also because he was instructed to by his lieutenant.
