How does sleep impact physical health?
“Sleep affects almost every tissue in our bodies,” says Dr. Michael Twery, a sleep expert at NIH. “It affects growth and stress hormones, our immune system, appetite, breathing, blood pressure and cardiovascular health.” Research shows that lack of sleep increases the risk for obesity, heart disease and infections.
Some benefits of getting enough sleep include:

We get sick less often.

We stay at a healthy weight.

sleeping well can lower your risk for serious health problems, like diabetes and heart disease.

Sleep reduces stress and improve your mood.

We think more clearly and do better in school and at work.

We get along better with people.

How can eating right impact our physical health?
Adults who eat a healthy diet live longer and have a lower risk of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Healthy eating can help people with chronic diseases manage these conditions and avoid complications. This indicates that having a healthy diet can lead us to a long, happy, and disease free life.
Some benefits of eating healthy foods include:

A healthy diet keeps skin, teeth, and eyes healthy.

Supports muscles.

Boosts immunity.

Strengthens bones.

Supports healthy pregnancies and breastfeeding.

Helps the digestive system function.

How does exercise affect physical health?
Being physically active can improve your brain health, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, strengthen bones and muscles, and improve your ability to do everyday activities. Adults who sit less and do any amount of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity gain some health benefits. Exercise can also be an escape for people who tend to be stress out or people who are unhappy with themselves.

How does stress impact physical health?
Stress can put you at increased risk for a variety of physical and mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, digestive issues, headaches, muscle tension and pain, heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, sleep problems, weight gain, and memory and concentration impairment.

How do drugs affect physical health?
Prolonged use of certain illicit drugs can result in a dopamine deficiency and lead to compulsive, drug-seeking behavior and long-term changes to mood and mental health. Sometimes, illicit drugs can cause symptoms of intoxication and withdrawal that mimic mental disorders.

Why is weight control important for physical health?
Achieving a healthy weight can help you control your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar. It might also help you prevent weight-related diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and some cancers. Eating too much or not being physically active enough will make you overweight.

How does sun and nature impact our physical health?
When sunlight hits your skin, your body releases something called nitric oxide into your blood. This compound brings down blood pressure and improves heart health. Maintaining healthy blood pressure can reduce your risks of cardiac disease and stroke.

1. Speak to a Therapist
If you still feel out of control and find yourself being emotionally reactive, it may be time to seek outside help. A therapist can give you effective strategies on what to do when you feel out of control. With some new tools, practice, and guidance, you can get control over your reactivity.

2. Replenish Your Energy
Naturally, people are more reactive when they are exhausted, hungry, or under stress from some other outside situations like a graduate school exam or a difficult day at the office. To reduce your emotional reactivity it is important that you sleep 6-8 hours a night, that you are eating healthy meals, and that you are drinking enough water.

3. Control anxiety and unwanted thoughts
Unwanted thoughts are an extremely common symptom of anxiety disorders. Anxiety is the type of mental health disorder that specifically causes negative thinking, and the inability to control the thoughts that come into your head.
