Mark had 4 kids with his wife Olivia Langdon Clemens. Mark delt with many loses. He lost his son Langdon due to diphtheria at the age of two but then he got his first daughter Susy. He later on had another daughter named Clara. As his life continued  his wife died at the ago of 24 from meningitis. This song shows how the Mark Twain believed the Industrial Revolution was a "Gilded Age." Gilded means; "covered thinly with gold leaf or gold paint. Mr. Twain was trying to explain that behind all the "glory" of the Revolution was a broken down country.

This songs shows how Mark Twain must have felt after he lost his son at such a young age. That son who died was his very first child so losing him impacted Mark in a very negatively way because he lost him to something that he wasn't able to fix or prevent.

"On board I'm the captain so climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore"
This part of the song relates to Mark and his life because as you know he was a pilot for his own boat and in the song it's talking about being caption and going to sail. This would be Mark Twain's background because back when he was looking for a job and he was inspired by the steamboat pilot named Horace E. Bixby. As a steamboat pilot you would make about $250 a month. Twain studied about 2,000 miles of the Mississippi for more than 2 years before getting his license in 1859. Sam wanted his brother to join him which he later on did but was killed while working on the Pennsylvania boat because it exploded. Twain felt very guilty after this had happened to his brother. 
"My boy, you must get a little memorandum-book, and every time I tell you a thing, put it down right away. There's only one way to be a pilot, and that is to get this entire river by heart. You have to know it just like A B C." This was told to Sam by Horace B. Horace told this to Mark because again he did want to become a pilot very badly but he didn't really have any guidance from anyone in his family.

In these stories he made his home town of Hannibal Missouri famous, but he wrote it as if it were St. Petersburg Missouri.
