At least associates degree but bachelors degree is most common. You want to earn a bachelors degree because there is more money to make with the degree. There is no volunteer or inter to gain experience. The best thing is for to be good with experience to know how to draw, use a computer, and be able to work with a team.  Keeping up with trends and recognizing how people wear the shoes and how they don't is important.
