Colonists, angered by British-imposed taxes without representation, dumped tea into Boston Harbor in protest.

The Boston Gazette
December 17, 1773
TEA DESTROYED IN DARING NIGHT PROTEST
Peaceful but Powerful Act of Defiance in Boston Harbor

Last evening, a group of men—some dressed as Mohawk Indians—boarded three ships in Boston Harbor and destroyed an entire shipment of tea in protest against British taxation.

Starting with Captain Hall’s ship, the protestors cracked open the wooden tea chests and dumped their contents into the sea. They continued to Captain Bruce’s and Captain Coffin’s vessels, emptying a total of 342 chests in under three hours. The harbor waters were soon covered in floating leaves of tea, stretching from the south part of town to Dorchester Neck.

Despite the large crowd, the protest remained disciplined. No other goods on the ships were touched. In fact, when a padlock was accidentally broken during the action, the protestors replaced it, showing great care for private property. A few individuals who tried to pocket tea were quickly stopped and removed by the crowd.

By morning, the town was calm, and many citizens appeared joyful—some pleased by the act of protest, others by the peacefulness of the night. Reports suggest even the ship owners were relieved to have the tea gone without damage to their vessels.

This bold act follows ongoing anger over the Tea Act and British attempts to tax the colonies without their consent. The people of Boston have made their message clear: No taxation without representation.

Excerpt from a Letter by George Washington to Benjamin Tallmadge (1781)

I have received your letter about the Loyalist fort on Long Island, known as Fort Franklin. It is a place where many of the King’s supporters (Loyalists) gather, and it poses a threat to our efforts. If we can surprise and capture it, we may deal a blow to their confidence and gather useful information.

This operation must be carried out carefully and secretly. I trust your judgment and courage, but we must avoid unnecessary risks. Only if you feel the mission can succeed should you proceed.

The Loyalists at this fort are dangerous not just because of their numbers, but because they help the British with supplies and information. If we can take away this stronghold, it would be a valuable win for our cause.

Excerpt from Thomas Paine’s Common Sense

It’s foolish for a small island like Britain to rule over a vast continent like America. No place on Earth should be ruled by another just because that’s the way things have always been.

Britain claims to be our “parent country,” but parents should care for their children, not hurt them. The British government has caused nothing but trouble—taxes, war, and unfair treatment.

We have tried to make peace with them, but they don’t listen. They treat us like property, not like people with rights.

It’s time for us to break away and govern ourselves. We don’t need a king to tell us what to do. We can create a better government—one that listens to the people and protects everyone’s rights.

America has the chance to be a free and strong nation. We must act now.

The colonists were tired of unfair taxes and not having a voice, so they stood up for freedom. Today, that fight still matters because it inspired other countries and shows why democracy is important.

In this passage, it talks a lot about Thomas Paine's point of view on British rule. He mentions many reasons, but the one that stood out to me was when he states that the British would say that they are the parents of America, but they go and kill the children of America. He also mentions how they have to act now and break away from this type of government, because if they don't, then who will? They have to come together to protect themselves and their rights. This source tells me that the American Revolution helped us come a long way by showing how people are trying to come together to get human rights and get rid of unfair government. This connects to issues today because people are still fighting for their rights when they shouldn't have to, but also, people come together to create a bigger base and work together to fix other issues.

She warned him about how the women would rebel if they were ignored and didn't get fair treatment. They wanted to be seen as friends and be treated equally. This tells me that during the American Revolution, women were viewed as inferior and were treated unfairly compared to men. This issue is still around today, and women are still being taken advantage of.

Even though people don't know the exact words of his speech, it was rewritten by a biographer named William Wirt. This shows how he was a big part of the American Revolution because it helped Virginia just weeks before the first battles. This connects to today's issues because lots of people are speaking out about issues, and the more people that raise their voice and speak out, the more it helps spread the message and helps the issue in the long run

It shows that ideas and persuasive writing were crucial in rallying people to the revolutionary cause, not just battles. Just like pamphlets, social media, and news today shape public opinion and can quickly spread new ideas or movements.

Not all colonists wanted independence; some (Loyalists) supported Britain, causing divisions and conflict within the colonies. Washington’s letter shows concern about Loyalist threats. The Revolution was also a civil conflict, with Americans divided against each other, not just fighting the British. This is similar to how modern societies can be deeply divided on political issues, leading to internal tensions and challenges to unity.
