고려는 고구려의 뒤를 잇는다는 뜻이었지요.
왕건은 개경을 도읍으로 삼고 나라를 잘 다스렸어요.
왕건은 요나라에게 무너진 발해의 백성들을 받아들였고,항복해  온  신라의 땅을 합쳐 나라의 힘을 키웠지요.견훤의 도움으로 후백제를 무너뜨린 왕건은 한반도를 다시 하나로 통일하게 되었어요.
왕건은 고구려를 본받아 고려의 땅을 넓히기로 했다.
