Hi, I'm Elane. I'm Brazilian and a Professor at IFF (Instituto Federal Fluminense), a school located in the north of Rio de Janeiro state. I'm really excited to get to know each of you. Also, I can't wait to learn a little bit more from your interests, habits and anything else you'd like to show us from your rich culture. So here is your space to post a 2-3 minute video with personal information of yours (name, family, ambitions, favorites/likes/dislikes, school, etc.). Feel free to choose the place where you will record your video, but it'd be very good if you also showed a little of your school or of your city (a favorite place for instance) to your international peers. Let your imagination fly!
Deadline: March 27th.

I hope you all have very fruitful dialogues while getting acquainted and more involved with the topic of this project.

After you read the text “A Biopic Should Entertain As Well As Inspire: An Interview with Kasi Lemmons” and watch the movie “Harriet”, discuss about these questions with your peers in your mini group and post a single text with your reflections, observations and conclusions.

1. The text mentions that “the African-American director and co-writer firmly grounds the audience in the historical moment and resists the impulse to foreground her protagonist against the sweep of history”. Do you agree with that? Do you think the plot gave you a good view of that historical moment? Do not forget to use parts of the movie to support your answer.
2. “While Harriet Tubman was a woman of action, and the film celebrates that element of her personality, Lemmons above all stands in awe of her humanity” – this is a passage of the text that brings to Harriet a much broader characteristic than heroism: humanism. In your opinion, what could be the difference between heroism and humanism? What examples of humanism could you find in Harriet’s attitudes?
3. Lemmons says she had some consultants’ help to make the film, who were they? How did they help her? Pick a scene of the movie and try to describe what importance a consultant could have had on that particular scene making.
4. Lemmons says music plays a very important role in the film and in the enslaved people’s lives. What importance is that? Now think beyond the interview and bring what you know about slavery, what do you think music represented and still represents in terms of its connection with culture, history, feelings and resistance of those people?
5. Taking into account the answers you gave to the previous questions, can your group decide on a moment of the movie that really drew your attention? Use your mini group discussions to decide on a single moment and say why you came to this decision.

We agree because if they foreground her protagonist, it would decrease the importance of that historical moment.
Yes, I do. The plot shows a good view of her life (From adulthood until middle age), her escape from the slavers, and the plot twists when she returns without letting the audience lose their interest. We can see that scene in the movie when the runaway slaves describe their lives for William writes in the book and later in the movie when he introduces Harriet to the "Underground Railroad".
The difference between heroism and humanism is, in heroism, she fights to free all the slaves, and in humanism, she does not get dominated for revenge at the final of the movie when she doesn't kill Gideon, but leaves him to his fate in the forest.
Kasi Lemmons has the help of Kate Clifford Larson, Kate is a writer who helps her learn about Harriet, they also have some agricultural history consultants and two African-American history teacher consultants.
In the movie music was awesome and portrayed the role for sharing the feelings of the characters, cultural importance, the events, and the essence of the time which was created, music is perfect to unite people.
Our favorite scene was when Harriet shot Gideon in the forest. Moreover, when she makes an incredible speech: "So since your daddy sold my sisters I pray for God to make me strong enough to fight, and that's what prayed for ever since our reason. Then was one or two things I had a right Liberty or Death, If I can't have one I have the other."

1 - Yeah, we really agree with that. The movie make us feel like we were in her skin, with her fears and happy moments and in the most important parts of this story, the movie kept being loyal to the reality, like in the situation of the slaves, the use of weapons, the language of the characters, the separation of the families, the place where Harriet found a shelter and how she arrived there, just some small details like one secondarie character and some numbers that aren't totally accurate according to some sites we read.

2 - We belive that a person cant have heroism without humanism, like heroism is to do the right thing mainly when you have to put your own life in danger in order to save other ones, and humanism is totally connected with helping the others, but its more connected with the feelings that you must have to want to help, humanism is really similar with empathy, the hability to put another one's shoes and it results in being more kind, more comprehensive. Harriet manged to have these two characteristcs in the entire movie and one of the most clear moments where we can see Harriet's humanism is when she prays for the her older slaveholder who had died, even after his denial for her freedom.

3 - Some of the consultants who worked on the film include historians, cultural experts, and descendants of Harriet Tubman. They helped Lemmons and the film's producers to accurately portray the time period, cultural context, and experiences of enslaved people in the United States.
One scene in the movie where the input of consultants may have been particularly important is when Harriet is fleeing from slave catchers and hiding in a river. This scene is crucial to the plot, as it showcases Harriet's resourcefulness and determination to escape slavery. A consultant with expertise in the history of the Underground Railroad and the experiences of enslaved people may have helped to ensure that the scene accurately depicts the challenges and dangers of fleeing from slavery. They may have advised on the types of terrain and obstacles that Harriet would have encountered, the clothing and equipment she would have used, and the strategies she would have employed to avoid detection.

4-The music was very important in the movie. One of the reasons is that the music talks a lot about freedom, especially the enslaved people's freedom, Harriet's freedom, that was why the music "Stand Up" of Cynthia Erivo was so important in the movie. Also, the musics and art are part of the culture of these populations who were slaved and its was a way to keep their spirt alive and fighting, connecting then with their origins and even with their spiritual part.
There is a curiosity that in the scene where Harriet is saying goodbye to her mother before she escapes, the music that is playing and that she sings says " When that pharaoh chariot comes
I'm gonna leave you
I'm bound for the promised land..."
This lyrics is a reference to the nickname harriet will receive as the black Moises, and here the pharaoh is the one who wants to buy her and the promised land is her freedom.

5- the moment of the movie that really drew our attention was the moment where Harriet arrives at the house of her old master to rescue the daughter of her sister before the wife of the master wanted to make an ambush to catch Harriet, because God sent Harriet to make the rescue before any problem or trouble.

1)This film provides a detailed and moving look at the historical moment when slavery was legal in the United States and many people fought for its abolition. It accurately portrays the hardships faced by slaves and the consequences of the struggle for freedom.
For example, in the scene where Harriet escapes from the plantation where she worked as a slave, the film illustrates the risk that slaves took when trying to escape.

2) Heroism is usually associated with courageous and remarkable deeds, often performed under extreme circumstances.
On the other hand, humanism is a concept that emphasizes the importance of the dignity of human worth. Where the rights and needs of all individuals are met.
In the film, Harriet risks her own life to free others from slavery, demonstrating strong compassion for others. In addition to fighting not only for the freedom of slaves but also for equal rights and social justice for black people in the United States, being an advocate of education and encouraging people to learn and become independent.

3) According to Kasi Lemmons, she worked with several consultants to ensure historical accuracy in the film, such as Dr. Kate Larson, who authored the biography "Harriet Tubman: Bound for the Promised Land", which served as one of the main research sources for the film. In addition to history professors and scholars of African-American culture who ensured the authenticity of the film.
One of the scenes in which the presence of a consultant was essential was when Harriet Tubman is chased by slave captors in the river. The consultant and curator of the National Museum of African American History and Culture provided important information on navigational tactics and skills and the pursuit techniques used by slave hunters at the time.

4) Music was a form of communication and expression for enslaved people, who were often forbidden to read or write.
During the slavery era in the United States, music was a secret form of communication between slaves, who used coded lyrics and melodies to convey important messages.
In the film, music conveys the history and cultural context of the time, as well as giving emotion, showing the fighting spirit of the characters, and expressing hope and connection.
Music has always been an important way of connecting with the culture, history, and resistance of enslaved people, and it continues to be a significant part of African cultural heritage, keeping aspects of its identity alive.

5) The scene that caught the attention of our group was when Harriet is confronted by her former slave owner, Edward Brodess. He even tries to persuade Harriet to return to slavery, but she doesn't listen to his threats and continues to fight for freedom. She defies Brodess and states that she would rather die free than live as a slave again. The scene is a demonstration of her courage and sense of justice and makes us reflect on the importance of defending our values even in the face of challenges.

Based on my understanding, I hold the belief that the director of the movie "Harriet" effectively presented a well-rounded view of the historical moment. From your perspective, the director's meticulous attention to detail made it easier for you to identify the specific period in which the movie is set. For example, the fact that Minty is married to a free man signifies that the story takes place beyond the initial years of slavery in the United States. Additionally, the scene where Minty and her husband attempt to show her enslaver a lawyer's letter requesting their freedom not only emphasizes that enslaved individuals had interactions with lawyers but also highlights their ability to make such requests to their owners. These details collectively suggest a timeframe closer to the Civil War rather than the early stages of slavery.Furthermore, the depiction of how slaves were treated provides valuable insight into the period. The scene where Minty (Harriet Tubman) is being prepared for sale, with signs being posted and hunters actively searching for her while she tries to say her farewells to her family while in flight from her owners, serves as an important indicator of the era and the treatment of slaves during that time.To summarize, in your view, the director's meticulous attention to historical accuracy and the portrayal of specific scenes and situations in "Harriet" effectively transport you into the historical moment, enabling a deeper understanding of the time period in which the movie is set and the challenges faced by individuals like Harriet Tubman.

From my understanding heroism and humanism share similarities but also have distinct differences. However, in the movie "Harriet," you believe that Harriet herself embodies both qualities simultaneously. The film presents numerous instances of heroism, such as Harriet's courageous return to rescue her husband, family, and friends. Even after their successful rescue, she remains determined to put herself in harm's way to continue saving lives, exemplifying her heroic nature. At the same time, the movie reveals Harriet's humanistic side. In Auburn, she passionately expresses her refusal to give up on rescuing slaves, emphasizing that distance is not a deterrent. This decision is driven by her heartfelt compassion rather than political motivations. Additionally, there is a scene where she displays assertiveness by pointing a gun at an individual who hesitates to enter the lake. This moment showcases her understanding that sometimes firmness is required to establish trust and exhibit leadership. Throughout the film, Harriet consistently demonstrates her unwavering commitment to leaving no one behind. While she may exhibit occasional acts of violence, her ultimate actions align with what is morally right, displaying a harmonious blend of humanity and heroism.

The filmmakers of "Harriet" collaborated with a team of consultants, including historians, cultural experts, and descendants of Harriet Tubman, to ensure an accurate portrayal of the time period, cultural context, and the experiences of enslaved individuals in the United States. One particular scene in the movie where the input of these consultants may have been crucial is when Harriet is escaping from slave catchers and seeking refuge in a river. This pivotal scene highlights Harriet's resourcefulness and unwavering determination to break free from the bonds of slavery. With the guidance of consultants well-versed in the history of the Underground Railroad and the lived experiences of enslaved individuals, the filmmakers likely strived to authentically depict the challenges and perils faced by those attempting to flee slavery. These consultants might have provided invaluable insights into the specific terrains, obstacles, and dangers that Harriet would have encountered during her escape. Their expertise may have influenced decisions regarding the accurate portrayal of the clothing, equipment, and strategies Harriet would have employed to evade detection and navigate her path to freedom.By incorporating the knowledge and perspectives of historians, cultural experts, and descendants of Harriet Tubman, the filmmakers aimed to ensure that the scene and the overall film respectfully and accurately depicted the realities of the Underground Railroad and the bravery exhibited by Harriet Tubman and others in their quest for freedom.

During the era of slavery, music held great significance in the lives of enslaved individuals, serving as a profound connection to culture, history, emotions, and resistance. In the context of slavery, music played a vital role in preserving cultural heritage. As many enslaved people were forcibly separated from their African traditions and languages, music became a means to maintain their identity and reconnect with their ancestral roots. Enslaved individuals incorporated elements of African musical traditions, rhythms, and instruments into their music, preserving a sense of their cultural heritage.Music also provided a powerful outlet for expressing emotions within the harsh realities of slavery. It became a source of solace and catharsis, allowing enslaved individuals to voice their sorrows, hopes, and dreams. Spirituals emerged as a prominent genre, blending religious themes with personal narratives and messages of resilience and liberation. Moreover, music became a significant tool for resistance against the oppressive system of slavery. Enslaved people used songs as a form of coded communication, conveying messages of escape routes, warnings, or calls to unite and resist. Through lyrics and rhythms that held hidden meanings, they could organize escape attempts, uprisings, and acts of defiance.Even today, the music stemming from the experiences of slavery continues to hold profound significance. It serves as a living testimony to the strength, resilience, and creativity of those who endured enslavement. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles for freedom, justice, and equality, and the music remains a powerful medium through which their stories and legacies persist. Music played a crucial role in the lives of enslaved people, symbolizing their connection to culture, history, emotions, and resistance. It acted as a vessel for cultural preservation, emotional expression, and covert forms of communication and resistance. The music born from this era continues to resonate, bearing witness to the endurance and spirit of those who experienced the atrocities of slavery.

The scene that I was moved by was in which Harriet confronts her former slave owner, Edward Brodess. Despite his efforts to coerce her into returning to slavery, Harriet remains resolute and unyielding. She boldly asserts that she would rather embrace freedom even at the risk of her own life. This powerful moment highlights her unwavering courage and unwavering dedication to justice, serving as a poignant reminder of the importance of steadfastly defending our values, even in the face of daunting challenges.
