We choose the second digital competency; developing and mobilizing technological skills. Through this activity, the student is learning how to use technology, in this case, to read and answer comprehension questions online.

The activity supports this competency because the whole activity is based on a website used for reading. The student is learning how to use a new platform that they might not be used to. It also can develop their technological skills because since they aren't used to it, they would have to play around at first in order to get to know it better. Secondly, if there were a student who doesn’t understand, by explaining it and helping, it would further their comprehension of the new platform.

This activity aligns well with Newsela, as the platform offers leveled, authentic texts that students can read independently at their own pace. The highlighting and re-reading functions support comprehension and allow learners to engage with the text actively. Group and class discussions then build on this individual work by encouraging collaboration and oral language use. Finally, the teacher’s wrap-up ensures that students confirm their understanding with accurate information.

The activity begins with a pre-task, where the teacher asks students questions about what they already know about giraffes to activate prior knowledge. The prompts will be true of false statements which they will have to answer YES or NO to :

1. Giraffes live in the wild on every continent.

2. Scientists used to believe there was only one species of giraffe.

3. The new report says there are four different giraffe species.

4. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) led the study about giraffes.

5. Masai giraffes are mainly threatened by poaching.

6. Northern giraffes live in South America.

7. Genes were one of the types of data that researchers studied to compare giraffes.

8. Northern giraffes are the most endangered giraffe species.

9. Southern giraffes have the smallest population.

10. Giraffe skull shapes are the same in all species.

Next, in the task stage, students individually read a Newsela text on giraffes, highlighting and re-reading passages to help them understand and gather information connected to the initial questions. Afterward, students work in small groups of three to share their understanding, compare answers, and fill in any missing information together. Finally, in the post-task, the whole class comes back together to review the same questions, with students responding before the teacher confirms the correct answers.

Pre-reading questions, to activate prior knowledge. Then, they individually read the text and highlight interesting or surprising facts. Learners then pair up with their elbow partner, to check the accuracy of the pre-reading statement and discuss valuable information they found. After the discussion, the teams will complete to test their comprehension. To wrap up the activity, the group will discuss the pre-reading statements and the teacher will clarify misconceptions and provide the correct answers.

Using the tool “Newsela” engages with the tip #1 “Select materials with appropriate reading texts” by allowing the teacher to select texts matching their students' level due to the vast variety of texts and articles this tool provides. It also engages with tip #4 “Include evaluation of comprehension and language” because it includes reading comprehension questions at the end of each article. These help students evaluate how well the students have understood the content.
