I chose this picture of me and my baby brother Henry ten years ago. My mom was practicing skin to skin with him and I wanted to give it a “try”. I thought this photo perfectly fit the importance of infant bonding and overall the importance of skin to skin postpartum. My brother fell asleep pretty quickly after I started to hold him like this and was out for about an hour or two. I wanted to include this in my project because this was a really special time for me and it shows my understanding of caring for a newborn.

Art of a mum and sleeping infant doing skin to skin post breastfeeding. I thought this painting showcased the joys of breastfeeding and the bond it creates between mum and babe. This painting to me shows the plus side to breastfeeding, spending time with your baby and how breastfeeding can help babies sleep and support lifelong development (Smith & Forrester, 2021).

I was influenced to choose this topic because of my aunt and her struggle with postpartum depression and how she feels it ruined the relationship she had with her son when he was born and for a while postpartum. When I was choosing my topics after spending a few weeks in my maternal child placement and seeing patients with postpartum depression interact with their newborns, I became more involved and decided I wanted to discover more about the relationship between mothers with postpartum depression and their infants, as well discuss the importance of treatment and support of new mothers. By looking at how postpartum depression affects both mother and child we can help to promote a safer experience for both.
