Egeus believes his daughter Hermia can only and must marry Demetrius. Egues asks Theseus to assist him in marrying off his daughter who is in love with another. (Egeus has ownership over Hermia)

Hermia is in love with Lysander, the handsome man who has courted her and wishes her the stars. Hermia plans to run away with Lysander and get married. Hermia feels the need to run away because her father and Theseus leave her no choice. She must choose between becoming a nun marrying her father's choice who she does not love, Demetrius or dying for going against her father's wishes. Hermia runs away with Lysander only to awake after her slumber and come to realize Lysander no longer has feelings for her neither does Demetrius. Hermia turns on Helena believing she stole her lover.

Despite being told off by Hermia's father Lysander proves himself worthy of marrying her. Lysander points out his financial and social status to Egeus. After Egeus and Theseus disprove their love he proposes a plan to Hermia. Lysander proposes to run away with her and get married. Lysander is mistaken for Demetrius and gets a love spell put on him that makes him fall in love with Helena forgetting about Hermia. Lysander fights against Demetrius for Helena. After falling asleep next to Hermia, Oberon places an antidote on Lysander making him no longer have feelings for Helena. Lysander is awakened the next morning by Theseus, Egeus and Hippolyta where he is granted the ability to marry Hermia.

Helena seeks help from Hermia, she asks to know the secret for grabbing Demetrius attention. Hermia simply says the more she hates him the more he follows her, she has done nothing. The lovers Hermia and Lysander share their plan of marriage to Helena who plans to tell Demetrius in hopes of gaining his attention while ruining their love story. Helena also shares her feelings towards love revealing how when one is in love they don't see the flaws. Helena then proceeds to gain Lysander's love and Demetrius's love all because of the love spell. Hermia turns on Helena for stealing Lysander from her resulting in Helena's speech of sisterhood. After running after the angered Lysander and Demetrius she falls asleep next to Demetrius. The two awaken to the news they can marry each other alongside Lysander and Hermia and Theseus and Hippolyta.

Theseus won against the battle with Hippolyta and now will marry her. Theseus is asked to resolve the Egeus problems with his daughter and advises Hermia to either marry her fathers pick (Demetrius),die, or become a nun. Theseus grants the four lovers the right to marry each other alongside him and Hippolyta.

(Act 1, Scene 1)Hippolyta defeated by Theseus now must marry him as the true feminist she is she feels no happiness in the marriage and even sides with Hermia when her father's controlling argument arises.
