There is a critical period from birth-age 8-9. This is the time where a child can learn a language and after this period of time it becomes harder.

Learning theory is the other key theory where theorist believe children are not born with anything, rather they are taught through reinforcements. 

Interactionist theory is an approach where theorist believe biological and social factors have to interact in order for children to learn language.

These steps are important because of the Zone of Proximal Development which is what a student can and cannot do with and without help.

The 5 stages consist of:

Stage 1: Preproduction- have limited comprehension 
Stage 2: Early Production- has limited comprehension, use one or more words.
Stage 3: Speech Emergence- Has good comprehension, can produce simple sentence, might have grammatical errors
Stage 5: Intermediate Fluency- excellent comprehension 
Stage 6: Advanced Fluency- Near-native level of speech
