There were three main civilisations in this region – the Maya, the Aztecs and the Inca (see image on next page). Two of these civilisations remained by the time of the Age of Exploration in the 15th century, when European explorers first reached the Americas. These were the Aztecs, in the region that is now Mexico, and the Incas in the region that is now Peru.

 1000-2000CE -A group of people leave their homeland in Aztlan, this group would later become know as the Aztecs

1200CE - The Aztecs arrive in the basin of Mexico & settle near Lake Texcoco

1325 CE – The city of Tenochtitlan, which would later become the Aztec captial 

1492 CE – Christopher Columbus becomes the first European to discover America 

1502 CE – Moctezuma II is elected supreme leader of Tenochtitlan after his uncle Ahuitzotl is killed

1519 CE – Hernan Cortes and his fleet of ships reached Vera Cruz and go inland to Tenochtitlan; Cortes imprisons King Moctezuma II but allows him to continue his rule.

June 1520 CE – Hernan Cortes escapes from Tenochtitlan after a revolt

 November 1520- August 1521 CE – The Spanish conquistador’s and Hernan Cortes returns to Tenochtitlan and lay siege to the city; the Aztecs surrender after many months
