To myself, health means more than just being free from illness, it's about having an overall well-being in our physical, mental, and social aspects. It's about finding balance in life, including our diet, physical activity, mental well-being, and social connections. True health lets us live a fulfilling life and pursue our dreams, making the most of the world around us.

As a student nurse, a competency standard in Domain 7: Professional Practice of the 'Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice: Working with People from Migrant and Refugee Backgrounds' framework, that I find particularly important is 12.1 "Clinicians develop and maintain an awareness of their own culture, beliefs, values and biases, and their impact on the clinician’s interactions in healthcare settings". This involves acknowledging that we all have our own biases and preconceptions, and it's essential to actively challenge them when providing care to individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Having learnt more about this domain i will now continue to reflect on my own biases and work to ensure that I approach each patient with an open and non-judgmental mindset. By doing so, I aim to provide care that is respectful, sensitive, and responsive to the cultural needs and preferences of all of my future patients.

Working with people from migrant and refugee backgrounds.
The Impact of Social Determinants on Migrant/Refugee Health in Australia

Social determinants play a significant role in the health and well-being of migrant and refugee populations in Australia. Here, we will explore three social determinants and their relationship to migrant/refugee health:

1. Income and Social Protection: Migrant and refugee populations often face economic challenges, including lower income levels and limited access to social protection programs (The National Library of Medicine, 2018). This can result in inadequate healthcare, housing, and nutrition, impacting their overall health (Sage Journals, 2017).

2. Education: Limited access to quality education can hinder the integration and well-being of migrants and refugees in Australia (Sage Journals, 2017). Language barriers, differences in educational systems, and a lack of recognition for foreign qualifications can create barriers to educational attainment (Sage Journals, 2017).

3. Housing, Basic Amenities, and the Environment: Many migrants and refugees in Australia experience overcrowded or substandard housing conditions (The National Library of Medicine , 2018). Poor housing can lead to health issues, such as respiratory illnesses and mental health concerns. Additionally, environmental factors, such as exposure to pollution or unsafe neighborhoods, can further impact their health (Sage Journals, 2017).

The National Library of Medicine.

The Syrian refugee crisis, spanning over a decade, remains the world's largest, displacing over 14 million people in search of safety (USA for UNHCR, 2023). Syrian refugees face significant health challenges upon relocation, including mental health issues, infectious diseases, and non-communicable diseases.

Mental Health: Fleeing conflict zones, Syrian refugees are at a heightened risk of mental healthproblems, such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety due to their traumatic experiences and forced migration (WHO, 2023). Treatment options includeculturally sensitive counselling and psychotherapy to help process their trauma (Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide, 2023).

Infectious Diseases: Limited access to healthcare in Syria and crowded refugee camp conditions can lead to a higher prevalence of infectious diseases like hepatitis, parasite
infections, and tuberculosis among Syrian refugees in Australia (Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide, 2023). Treatment involves screening, vaccinations, and medication tailored to the specific disease. For instance, hepatitis may require antiviral drugs, while TB might need a combination of antibiotics taken over several months (Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide, 2023).

Non-Communicable Diseases: Syrian refugees may also struggle with non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular conditions due to lifestyle changes during relocation (WHO, 2023). Managing these conditions involves guiding syrian refuges to adopt healthier lifestyles, regular exercise, stress management, and, if necessary, medication prescribed by healthcare providers
(WHO, 2023).

Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide.
