Leading up to the American Revolution, the British began to take control of American politics and economics. The British government had attempted to impose greater control over the colonies and make the Americans repay them for their defense for the colonies during the French and Indian war. Along with this, the Americans possessed little political control and lacked power in their own nation. They put forth many taxes and limitations such as the Tea Act in order to take power away from the Americans. Although taxes are often considered to be the main reason behind the American Revolution, the approaching war was more so about the need for individual freedom and republican government that the British stripped them of after the end to salutary neglect.

Prior to 1600, American colonists first inhabited Jamestown in hopes to acquire large sums of gold and were in pursuit of economic independence from Britain. As America settled and began to develop an agricultural based economy, the Triangular Trade Program was established, intertwining America and Britain’s economy. The change between both economies was dictated by a myriad of factors. Although some may say the British imposing restrictive acts such as the Navigation Act on Americans changed Britain’s economy, it was the creation of overseas trade and the balance of America’s production of raw goods and Britain’s production of finalized goods that truly struck change in Britain’s economy.

The French and Indian war had just ended and the British colonists had won. In the negotiations over the treaty, the British had won Florida, and all territories east of the Mississippi. Since the eastern seaboard had been mostly developed and most colonists had been ready to move west, however the British government in those same treaties had also promised protection to the native americans. The colonists saw these enactments, as well as later ones like the quartering act led colonists to consider the benefits of self government.

Prior to the start of the American Revolution and the sequence of events leading to a new independent democracy, the French and Indian war triggered the taxes imposed by the British. This was due to economic loss on the British side of the war and the need for the colonists to contribute to their ongoing debts. The colonists were not happy due to these taxes, and the events from the government and the upcoming colonists were a direct result of the war. Although the new American colonists were seeking a democracy different from the British system, overall freedom from British reign was vastly more important in bringing about their reaction to the British, from their lack of patience with British Martial Law and economic control leading to their rebellion. Therefore, even though the American colonists wanted to show their growth as a whole through a democracy, the idea of fighting back against injustice, by escaping the British control of unfair taxes and laws was the main cause in the drastic reaction of the colonists.

Prior to 1776 and the revolutionary war, there were periods where British rule was either overbearing to the colonies or extremely lenient to the point where colonists could forget they were a British colony. The most lenient Great Britain was, was during the period of salutary neglect where the colonies were free to trade with whomever, letting them be able to build a strong foundation without British influence. Due to the French and Indian war, salutary neglect ended, leading to more control over the colonies from Britain. The radical shift between British rule in a short period of time created animosities towards Great Britain. Although propaganda like Thomas Paine’s common sense greatly affected the colonist’s viewpoints on British treatment, the primary factor of influence towards the American colonies were the debts and taxes placed on the colonists after the French and Indian War, as well as Britain control of the colony’s trade and ports. Therefore, though propaganda did affect the colonists, it was economic inequality that ultimately led to the American colonial reaction towards Britain’s imperial authority, which played a significantly larger role.

Before the start of the American Revolution, the British government is the implementation of taxes and different acts to try to keep the colonists in check, but instead, it angered the colonists. The quartering acts, where the colonists had to allow the British soldiers into their homes without complaints, the navigation acts to try to control what was being shipped, the taxation of tea and whiskey all led to the idea of rebellion, but also it started to favor the idea of breaking away and becoming a self governed country. Although we showed significant signs of rebellion towards Britain's government, the ideas of self-government in America took an even bigger approach in which we could see through the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution. Therefore, the idea of self government not only influenced rebellion but allowed the colonists to act in more radical ways to gain that form of self-government.

As the French and Indian war commenced in 1754, British rule brought restrictions to the American colonies. Redcoats were brought in to help fight the war, yet stayed long after to control the colonies. Other restrictions such as shutting down the harbors to limit trade and controlling land ownership past the Appalachian mountains, were major factors toward the colony’s rebellion. In turn, the colonists turned toward the ideas of self-government. These factors made the Age of Enlightenment a big movement amongst the colonists which was shortly followed by the Revolutionary War. Although the British imperial authority controlled American colonies through taxation, causing disagreements and distrust between the colonists and the British government, the impending war was more so about the idea of Enlightenment and the need for individual freedom. Throughout the Enlightenment Era, colonists also expanded on the idea of self-government and republicanism while the British Rule continued to force their control on America, economically and politically.

From 1754 to 1776 growing tensions and militia presence in the colonies pushed colonists more towards the idea of self governmentalization. Following the French and Indian war, a 7-year war between the allied French and the Natives fighting the British forces, the colonists were taxed to help settle the debts of Britain. These increased taxes and the increase of British militia not only increased tension between colonists and Britain but also encouraged the colonies to become more independent.Although the presence of British militia in the colonies seemed to have a strong influence on the self governmentalization of the American colonies, the want for control over taxation on their imports and exports had a prevalent impact on their movement towards revolution. It’s important to know that their want for independence from the British was mainly influenced by the French and Indian war.

Leading up to the revolutionary war, the French and the Indian War took place, which allowed the King to post the British army in America. It also led to the British parliament implementing taxes such as the Stamp and Tea Act. The parliament implementing these taxes led to frustration by the colonists due to them not having any say in these taxes being put in place. Although taxes were a leading cause in the need for a new government, the king would not allow for representation in the parliament and was invading citizens’ privacy by stationing soldiers which wanted citizens to separate from the King´s form of government into their own form of a democracy.

After the French and Indian War tensions between the Colonists and Britain were high. The colonists were pushing farther away from Britain and the idea of self-governance became a enticing idea for the colonists. Although the colonists were angered by taxes, the fact that they weren’t represented in British Parliament and the unfair navigation acts were more extensive reasons for self-government. The colonists had a debt to pay from the French-Indian War, Britain gave them resources to fight and helped them win the war. Britain placed taxes and put acts like the Tea Act, the Stamp Act, and the Sugar Act on the colonists to help the colonists pay back their debts, which they deemed unfair. However, the colonists were more inclined to be self-governed by the fact that they did not receive representation in parliament, they thought that they shouldn’t have to pay taxes and follow British laws if they didn’t get any representation in the making of these laws. The British created Navigation Acts which made sure that the colonists would only be able to trade with them, causing them to not be able to grow their trading routes. These Navigation Acts became a large reason for the colonists need for self-government.
