Similar to the migrants, the animal is determined to reach its goal, and carries everything it owns with them. Since the migrants lost their homes and are pushed to go to California, they had to leave most of their belongings and carry only essentials. There are many obstacles along the journey from climbing on to the embankment to a car intentionally swerved to hit them. Unfortunately, most do not know much about cars. As a result, the car salesmen are horribly scamming everyone. They would oversell the cars and then give them bad batteries upon delivery. When engines would squeak, instead of fixing them, they would hide it by putting "in a couple quarts of sawdust" (62).
