Characterize the migrants as foreshadowed and symbolized by the turtle

Chapter three depicts a turtles journey as it crosses a road. The turtle "crawled, turning aside for nothing, dragging his high-domed shell over the grass" (14). Similar to the migrants, the animal is determined to reach its goal, and carries everything it owns with them. Since the migrants lost their homes and are pushed to go to California, they had to leave most of their belongings and carry only essentials. There are many obstacles along the journey from climbing on to the embankment to a car intentionally swerved to hit them. These obstacles foreshadow the many difficulties migrants will face on their way to California, but despite these odds, they will always act like the turtle and keep their "head held high" (14).

Sharecroppers and migrants depended on their crops to sustain themselves. Land in the west is difficult enough to cultivate without the dust bowl taking its toll. The wind spread dust everywhere and covered everything. The author illustrated that "Men stood by their fences and looked at the ruined corn, drying fast now, only a little green showing through the film of dust" (3). Their only source of income was destroyed, unable to pay bills, and barely feed their families.

Farming in general is not a prosperous profession. The great depression, dust bowl, and terrible land just make it worse. A poor farmer begged the owner from taking the land stating, "the kids are hungry all the time. We got no clothes, torn an' ragged" (33). To make matters worse, once they are forced off the land, the migrants are completely jobless and homeless.

Due to the dust bowl and poor conditions, most sharecroppers cannot afford to stay on the land. The owners and banks still have to make money so they force the families to leave. The bank is referred to as a monster, incapable of remorse. An owner explained that banks only "breathe profits; they eat the interest on money" (32). Companies and banks would rather ruin thousands of lives than lose a single cent.

The migrants all need transportation to get to California. Unfortunately, most do not know much about cars. As a result, the car salesmen are horribly scamming everyone. They would oversell the cars and then give them bad batteries upon delivery. When engines would squeak, instead of fixing them, they would hide it by putting "in a couple quarts of sawdust" (62). The migrants have no idea that they have been played and gotten awful cars.
