Pilot  committed suicide by flying the plane over the Indian ocean until it ran out of fuel, crashing into the sea and killing everybody.

 

At approximately 2:49 that afternoon, with more than 5,600 runners still in the race, two pressure-cooker bombs that were packed with shrapnel and hidden in backpacks among crowds of marathon-watchers—exploded within seconds of each other near the finish line along Boylston Street.

 

Three spectators died: a 23-year-old woman, a 29-year-old woman and an 8-year-old boy, while more than 260 other people were wounded. Sixteen people lost legs; the youngest amputee was a 7-year-old girl.

 

An investigation involving more than 1,000 federal, state and local law enforcement personnel was immediately launched.

 

Police used photographs and videos from surveillance cameras to pin point two male suspects. To start with they were hesitant to release the photos to the press as this would allow the suspects to know that the FBI can’t identify them. On the 18

^th of April they decided to release the photos to get the publics help. 

 

That night at around 10:30, Sean Collier, a 27-year-old police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was shot dead in his patrol car on the school’s Cambridge campus. The FBI later linked the murder to the Tsarnaev brothers. 

 

Soon after Collier was killed, Tamerlan Tsarnaev carjacked a Mercedes SUV at gunpoint, taking the driver hostage and telling him he was one of the Boston Marathon bombers. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev followed behind in a Honda Civic before joining his older brother and the hostage in the SUV. The brothers drove around the Boston area forcing the hostage to take out money from an ATM. The brothers discussed to the hostage about driving to New York City. When stopping at a gas station the hostage escaped and sprinted to another gas station he used the phone there and rang police. He informed them that the Boston bombers had taken him hostage, he described his car and told them that they could track it as his cell phone that was still inside. 

The police tracked the car to Watertown. A gun battle broke out between police and the two brothers. The brothers fired back and threw explosives towards police. After Tamerlan Tsarnaev was tackled to the ground after being shot. His brother got in the stolen car and drove straight at them. He ran his brother over and drove away. He then dumped the car and fled on foot. The area went on lock down as police looked for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Schools were shut down and people were told to stay inside their homes. A man called 911 when he noticed there was blood and a person in his covered boat. Police surrounded the area as well as having helicopters from above. They arrested Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and took him into custody . 

Police found a note indicating that they bombings were committed in relation to U.S wars in muslim countries.
