The writer makes the reader feel empathy for Mary as she is trapped on a coach surrounded by loud, obnoxious and invading people. Their is a contrast between the different personalities of the people on the coach as their is a drunken old man who just shouts at the driver "cursing him" and their is also a gluttonous red faced lady who is just sitting their "eating a great hunk of cake". Also the fact that the writer put "Red faced" connotates that the women has a bad past and is unapproachable. The women could also be angry that she is stuck in the situation that she is in.
