Stage 1: Trust Vs. Mistrust

This stage begins in infancy and continues on until about 18 months. During this stage children start to understand what to trust and what to not trust. This allows them to form relationships and when to protect themselves. "The critical element in developing trust is sensitive, responsive, constant caregiving." (Martorell pg. 150) As a baby I was well taken care of and never neglected. I understood that those around me would always help when I needed care.

The second stage is between 18 months to 3 years. During this stage toddlers begin to understand that they have their own will and become more independent. Children learn whether or not they need help. "Toddlers need adults to set appropriate limits, and shame and doubt help them recognize the need for those limits." (Martorell pg. 156-157) As a toddler I tried my best to do things on my own. When I could not do it, I had to accept help from others.

This stage begins around preschool age. At this age "They are learning that some things they want to do meet social approval whereas others don't." (Martorell pg. 210) Children want to do plenty of things but not all of it is good. When I was in preschool my little brother was three. I had to learn that if I wanted his toy, I could not just take it. He would cry and I would feel guilty. I needed to ask my mother if I could have it first.

This stage is during middle childhood. I like to use elementary school was the main age group. Children in this stage are understanding themselves and are beginning to develop self-esteem. During this stage they also start to learn how to completer tasks efficiently. If a child cannot do something correctly "they may develop a feeling of low self-worth, and thus develop a sense of inferiority." (Martorell pg. 276) At this age I move to a new state and started a new school. I had to learn to make new friends and do new things. As a child I was always confident and tried my best to do things the correct way to avoid feeling less in the new environment.

This stage is around high school and early adulthood. "Adolescents seek to develop a coherent sense of self..." (Martorell pg. 336) We start to figure out who we are. I am currently in this stage. I am learning who I am and trying to accomplish what I will do in society. Whether that is a good job or finishing college. I do not know all the answers but seek to complete my life.

Young adulthood is when this starts. This could be the early twenties to early forties. For this stage people seek to form relationships with others. If that is not done a person "suffers from isolation and self-absorption." (Martorell pg. 11) I have been in two serious relationships. One in high school and the other right now. I sought out the previous one in hoped of a future just to be disappointed. However, I am happy I was because I am now in my almost second year with my current boyfriend and hope to be getting married soon. He makes me feel complete and no need to be sad.

(Martorell pg. 11) Even though I am not at this stage in life I have a mother that cares and guides me. As I grow older, I wish to be able to guide my younger siblings, kids, and people like my mom guides me.

This stage is during late adulthood, also known as the last stage of development. During this stage elderly "achieve acceptance of own life" (Martorell pg. 11) by accepting that death is near or feeling saddened that death is near. They may feel that they did not live the life they hoped for. They must accept how their life was. If not, despair will take over. I hope that during this stage in my life I feel content with how I lived. I will not fear death and will not be saddened by it. I lived a good life and hope that I would not want to change anything.
