Drinking can cause harm to the drinker and those around them. A drinker can cause harm to others through accidents and drunk driving. “Consuming alcohol impairs cognitive, perceptual, and motor performance for several hours, particularly the first 2 or 3 hours after drinks are consumed.” (Sarafino & Smith, 2017, p. 183). Pregnant women should also consume no alcohol while pregnant because it can cause fetal alcohol syndrome. Long terms heavy drinkers can also develop liver disease, heart disease, brain damage, high blood pressure, and impaired immune function (Paker, 2003).
