I was surprised when Elie goes to his father to say happy new year and he says that they sat in silent but understood each other, this surprised me because Elie has always said that his father was not very emotional and hard to understand.

I feel bad for Elie and his father when Elie's father had his number written down during selection and was told to stay back, Elie was worried the whole day and they both thought he was going to die.

Elie represents thoughts the most because his thoughts impact the flow of the story. For example in the text it says "But now I no longer pleaded for anything." (68) and "Like an orphan. I thought: Even now, my father is helping me." These show how whatever Elie is thinking, it moves the plot forward and show he truly felt.

Elie represents the T more than the others because it tells us his feelings and shows his perspective of things. An example of evidence to support this is "I was nothing but ashes now, but I felt myself to be stronger than this Almighty to whom my life had been bound for so long. In the midst of these men assembled for prayer, I felt like an observer, a stranger." (68) And "I did not fast. First of all, to please my father who had forbidden me to do so. And then, there was no longer any reason for me to fast." (69) This shows how his thoughts help us understand him better.

I was kind of surprised that Elie refused to pray before Rosh Hashanah, I knew he no longer believed in a god, but I didn't know it would go this far.

I was also surprised they said Kaddish after the prayers but because they are in a concentration camp they knew they were going to die someday
