Voltaire was a big fan of civil liberties. These include the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion. He highly favored religious tolerance and shaped our views on one another. One of the many things that helped shape this view is the trial and execution of Jean Calas. He was found guilty for religious reasons, and was executed. Voltaire overturned his sentence but it was already too late.

Candide was his most famous of Voltaire's works and was dealing with the subject of optimism. At the time, it was generally accepted that evil did not exist, and we were in the "best of all possible worlds." Voltaire doubted this and created Candide. Candide is about a man named Candide who goes through many hardships. This includes war, natural conflicts like an earthquake. Candide goes through many difficulties, problems, and setbacks. But in the end, his mentor Pangloss still says that we live in the best of all possible worlds.

Thomas Paine would agree with Voltaire about his views on freedom of speech and how we should believe in logic. Freedom of speech helps the government know what the people want. Paine would support logic because he was anti religious, but he wouldn't support freedom of religion because of that.

1. I don't know much about Voltaire but from what I'm reading in this presentation I definitely agree with Voltaire's ideas.
2. I think Thomas Paine would agree with Voltaire because Thomas Paine also believed in freedom of religion.
3. I don't think Voltaire would agree with the BLM protests because they are rioting. In the riots, they actually killed other black lives and burned down other black peoples houses and stores.
4. I don't know who Voltaire would vote for because Voltaire is neither democratic or republic but just like with Thomas Paine I think Voltaire would vote Trump. He is definitely smart enough to recognize Biden's weak policies.
