There are 13 types of dumbo. Animals umbrella octopuses are members of the genus Grimpoteuthis, a subset of the Opisthoteuthidae family. They all have a characteristic umbrella shape between their tentacles and ear-like fins that they flutter to propel themselves through water. The flapping fins are used for propulsion, while the tentacles act as rudders to control the swimming direction. It also allows the octopus to walk on the sea floor. The average size of a dumbo is 20 to 30 centimeters, but a specimen measuring 1.8 meters long and weighing 5.9 kilograms has been found. The average weight of the creatures is unknown. Dumbo can be of various shapes, sizes and colors (red, white, brown, pink). They also have the ability to change color to camouflage themselves on the ocean floor. Their "ears" are a different color from the rest of the body.

Grimpoteuthis species are believed to live in the cold depths of the ocean between 400 and 4,800 meters. Some go down to 7,000 meters. Animals have been observed off the coasts of New Zealand, Australia, California, Oregon, Philippines, New Guinea, and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. They are the deepest-dwelling octopuses found on or slightly above the sea floor. The Mariana Trench is among them.

Dumbo does not sink due to its natural structure. For this reason, it can be seen that they are suspended in water. Dumbo is a carnivore that swallows its prey and completely destroys it. It eats isopods, amphipods, ringed worms, and animals that live along the hidorthermal vents. A dumbo's mouth is different from other octopuses that break down and grind their food. In order to contain all the prey, its tooth-like strips called radula have shrunk. Basically, they open their mouths and draw their prey in. The circus on the tentacles generates water currents to bring prey closer to the mouth.
