In terms of architectural shapes, most of the buildings in Great Britain consists of vaulted roofs, large windows, rectangular and tall buildings. Most of these buildings was inspired by buildings which dates all the way back to the roman and the medieval era. The Britain was also influenced by the French somewhere around the 12th century to the 16th century. Many of the early historical architecture made by the romans did not survive and very few stands above ground. One of which is the Portchester Castle that was actually a Roman fort but was founded in the late 11th century.

UK based company “Superdry” uses vintage graphics inspired from the western and Japanese culture in their t shirts and other merchandise.

Let’s talk about each countries’ differences,

Japan
After researching, it can be seen that Japanese graphic tees focus more on words and using simple typefaces and simple graphics.
Japanese people also tend to dress more casual and simple, hence colourful tees or shirts with colourful/complex graphics might not cater to them.
This might be influenced by their culture. ( Simplicity, Modest, Humble and Politeness)
Famous Japanese brands such as Uniqlo and Comme des Garçons can be seen making graphic tees with simple typefaces and graphics.

Britain
Western style graphic tees are more complex, colourful and uses a variety of typefaces.
As we all know, western people dress up more loudly as they are more open minded which is unlike Asian countries, where the clothes you wear reflects on your upbringing or family background.

Combination
Superdry wants to give a twist by combining both Japanese and western graphics tees. Simple vintage western graphics is used as the colours are not so bright and eyecatching. They also include simple western/Japanese typography.
Hence Superdry is able to cater both the needs of Asian and Wstern countries due to their efficiency of combining 2 different cultures’ designs together.

The Lolita fashion is a fashion subculture originating in Japan during the 90s period and it is influenced by the Victorians.

This type of fashion is seen all around Japan, mostly around places such as Harajuku, Tokyo or Akihabara.

The fashion is described as both modest and feminine and the materials used to construct the clothing is often premium such as silk.

Due to Asian beliefs and cultures, one of the reasons why the trend made it to Japan is because it is not revealing. As we can see, most Lolita clothes do not expose cleavage and the skirt is mostly below knee level.

The Lolita fashion has also influenced the Visual Kei wave in Japan. Visual Kei is a genre in Japanese music where bands dress up in unique constumes and using various levels of makeup and hairstyles and performing mostly rock, heavy metal and J-rock.

Other influences will be maid cafes in Japan where the waitresses dress around the Lolita theme and have the cafe designed around the Victorian era to give the customers a one of a kind experiences.

Lastly, the Lolita fashion also influenced cosplay and animes in Japan.

Japan is also influenced by UK in terms of social media apps they use.

One of the most popular apps amongst the two countries is Twitter.
Both countries find it more comfortable to express in terms of words and also for Twitter, your username can be created without using your real name, hence you have more privacy.

According to statistics and reliable data, Twitter is the 3rd most used app in a Japan and 2nd most used in the UK.

However for the Japanese, Twitter is more of an advantage for them to use as the type in Japanese characters.
Twitter has a 140 words limit. For our English users, this means that we aren’t able to express as much as the Japanese and according to research, it is said that you can write double of what you want to say in Japanese than English on Twitter.

For example the word: Aeroplane ( 9 words ) vs 飛行機 ( 3 words )

Hence you can see why the influence is also an advantage to the Japanese people.

However, most of these ancient buildings were lost through the years to natural disasters, fire and wars. Efforts were made to preserve some monumental buildings like shrines, temples , palace and castles.

With the import of Buddhism from China in the 6th Century, Temples were build resembling those in China with their wide courtyards and symmetrical layouts. Rowling.

Ever since the release of Harry Potter, it became a big hit in Japan to the point that in Osaka, a theme park called The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is created. The place also has a British kind of feel to it due to how everything is build.
