Freddie and Truus were only 14 and 16 when they decided to join the Dutch resistance and only a couple of years later they then became armed assassins. They formed a trio with Hannie Schaft and would lure and kill Nazi Soldiers. In May 1940, they joined their mother to distribute anti-Nazi information to the public, not only this but if they were caught they weren't scared to kill said Nazis. Their innocent look helped them to be unsuspected, Freddie would wear braids to look even younger than she was. In 1941, a Harleem Resistance Group commander saw that this innocent look could help them further their want to resist the acts of the Nazis. Truus said,” Only later did he tell us what we’d actually have to do: sabotage bridges and railway lines, And learn to shoot, to shoot Nazis…” Although they have never revealed how many Nazis they assassinated we know that Freddie was very talented at luring them in and they shot to kill.

Freddie was born in 1925 and her older sister, Truus, was born in 1923, in what is now Harleem, their mother was a communist and had an intolerance towards injustice. They were very aware of what the Nazis were doing, and would even have Jewish refugees hiding out in her home. They would help their mother spread the word about Germany and the truth of what was happening.

Hannie Schaft, Freddie, and Truus oversteegan formed a famous resistance trio and all brought different important aspects. Freddie was the more feminine one and was very fierce, Hannie brought the intellect and Truus would make most of the decisions. They did a multitude of things, they would have safe houses for Jewish children, they spread information, and more famously would lure and kill Nazi officers. We do not know many specifics about their missions or how they executed them but we know they were very successful. The three girls became very close and viewed Hannie as a best friend, so when Hannie was arrested and killed in 1945 they were devastated. Apparently, Hannie’s last words were,” I'm a better shot”. This was three weeks before the end of the war, so not only did the sisters have to deal with the loss of their best friend but had to deal with the trauma of the war.

The sisters and Hannie have gone down in history as some of the most powerful holocaust resistors, they are known for their clever ideas and how well they could execute their plans. Their tactics were unlike most of the other resistors, the way they were able to charm, seduce and trick Nazi officers to get justice was unmatched. An important factor of their legacy is how young they were, Freddie was only 14 when she murdered many Officers and Dutch commanders. the Dutch newspaper IJmuider Courant says that Truus said,” I’ve shot a gun myself and I’ve seen them fall. And what is inside us at such a moment? You want to help them get up.” I believe the fact that the girls still carried this caring mindset even against the people they hate the most is very telling. Their legacy is unforgettable and will carry forever.

Life after the War

As previously mentioned, Hannie Schaft was captured and killed by Nazis in 1945. The sisters continued to live after the war and led a great life. Truus went on and married a fellow resistor and expressed her experiences and emotions through art. She went to make sculptures and tried to share her story through public speaking, Freddie felt as if she was pushed to the sideline while Truus experienced more limelight. Freddie dealt differently she told VICE Netherlands that she coped,” by getting married and having babies,”. However later in Freddie’s life she yearned for more recognition, the girls had been casted as communists and didn't get the appreciation they deserved. During more modern times the sisters were finally recognized, in 2014, they were awarded the Mobilization War Cross by the Dutch Prime Minister. There were several books, and a movie made for the girls and today we know who they are and the work they did. Freddie passed away September 5th, 2018 a day before her 93rd birthday, she had three children. Truus passed away June 18th, 2016 she had four children one named Hannie Schaft.

What is the Dutch Resistance

The sisters were a part of the Dutch resistance movement, this came about after their country had been invaded and seeing what happened to the Dutch Jews. There wasn't a huge outbreak until the Jews started to get randomly arrested, Non-Jews rallied up people to strike. This resistance is mostly known for their intelligence and the power of information they had, It was them who told the allies that the SS IX and X divisions were in the region of Arnhem in September 1944, related to the Battle of Arnhem. If the people they told listened they could've avoided such a disastrous outcome. They did other things as well though, there were nine divisions created to help Jewish children, also more notably and maybe importunately they would blow up bridges and take more violent routes.

In the book Night By Elie Wiesel, we see firsthand how the German soldiers view the young girls. On page 46 the book says,” On the way, we saw some young German girls. The guards began to tease them. The girls giggled. They allowed themselves to be kissed and tickled, bursting with laughter. They were all laughing, joking, and passing love notes to one another.” This shows that the girls being able to seduce the Nazi officers into a vulnerable place to kill them isn't ridiculous.

The lyrics in “It’s My Life” can easily relate to the story of the sisters. The song says lyrics such as,” Yeah, this is for the ones who stood their ground”, “Tomorrow's getting harder, make no mistake Luck ain't even lucky, got to make your own breaks” and “It's my life And it's now or never I ain't gonna live forever I just want to live while I'm alive”. These songs could portray the story of the girls never giving up, and having to fight their own battles.
