Whether it’s in a bad way or good way, people react differently to what people say. So yes, words can be very powerful to certain people

Literacy and words have a lot of power to dictate a person’s attitude and point of view on a situation. Literacy give me people the knowledge that allows them to open their mind to many possibilities. Last year when we read about Frederick Douglas, he was purposely kept illiterate in order to keep him from realizing the injustice that he was facing.

There is immense power in words and literacy because they can cause action and reaction. Words symbolize movements and experiences. Words can cause wars, writings can cause oppositions. An example would be Martin Luther and his words that changed a nation. Or the literacy in Anne Frank’s or the book about lone survivor. My own experience would be when my mother’s sister said some hateful words to her and they caused eachother to lose their relationship for eight years.

Being literate is everything when talking about power. In order to gain power, understanding is important. Words can greatly affect a person’s self esteem and influence their actions. In the past, holding back education from women was a way to restrict their freedom and hold them back so they could remain inferior to men. If you do not have the tools to flourish you will not do so

This is an example of using effective diction. When we wrote college essays, effective diction is needed to show maturity and intellect. Public speakers need powerful diction and phrasing to "move" the audience to be effective. Diction and phrasing is effected and needed in everyday life if you want to be effective in stating a clear message.

Words and literacy is what drives society. It is the driving force among communication and understanding , because nothing can be accomplished if there is no communication. Spoken and written words can be interpreted differently by different people, so something simply stated by one individual can have a large impactly meaning on another individual. So in turn, words can hurt. Words can change opinions. And words can be impactful. Literacy is a large part of life in current society because being able to read is the ability to have an intake of information, the ability to communicate without speaking or even the ability to express your opinion amongst the masses. Words have a great influence on life and people and make a huge difference in society.

A great example would be the feud between countries and their leaders being broadcast over social media that has brought the world closer to total midnight on the nuclear clock, closer than when we were during the cold war. Literacy can control who knows the truth of the nations, when a majority is educated and has control over the education of the minority, they hold the power to stay in that majority and keep the others uneducated. Slavery is an example where literacy was used throughout history to gain power over others.

If someone has a hard time reading and writing then they will have a harder time in school and in everyday life. The smartest people can read and write and it allows you to communicate with others better. Books have helped shaped life since the early times of man. It is how we collect and interpret data and how we grow in our understanding of life.
