I chose prompt #2 because I felt this prompt was more special to me as a person. The composition is meant to be sort of surreal. There are two mediums used, pencil and watercolor. The bits in watercolor represent the present while the pencil represents the past. The past is muddled and the reflection of me is on the ground representing me at my lowest while the current me is standing up looking at my past with contempt.

I never really used the oil pastels on collage before so that was all new to me. I think the facial features were successful though because they look similar to how I look in my reference photo. I decided to use a matcha kitkat package, a mcdonalds paper bag, aluminum foil, black construction paper, paper towels, paper. and a college pamphlet for my collage. The collage itself is supposed to create a sense of juxtaposition from the greens of the camo jacket, the hair, and the mask in contrast with the black and whites of the background.

Something I’m very happy with is the detailwork on the self portrait itself. The camo-pattern I’m pretty proud of and the micron ink detailing came out just how I wanted.

Something I struggled with was working at a larger scale than what I was used to. I had glued two sheets of paper together for the portrait thinking that would be enough, but the portrait came out about 30% smaller than I was expecting. I also think the background is pretty plain, but I also don’t know what else I could have done given limitted supplies and limitted color palette.

I used pages in a dictionary, magazines, parts of a doll box, construction paper, staples, paint markers, pens, colored pencils, sharpies, and the package my eggroll came in. Since I cut my face in 2 horizontally, I decided to use 2 different reference photos for the top half of my face and the bottom half of my face to further create a sense of disconnect.

I think the overall hectic atmosphere I was trying to convey is present in this piece so I am very proud of myself for that.

Something I struggled with was finding materials to use and properly working with those materials. Frequently I would find things I really liked in a magazine but then it ended up not match my theme. As for the materials, underneath the red and blue I made a horrible streaky black mess that took hours to fix. I also drew some ugly creatures under some of the glued on pieces. Overall I struggled with self-control.

This is a portrait of my friend KT. I used magazines, printer paper, a book of quotes, pens, and sharpie marker. I only used brand names to make up this entire portrait because I wanted to bring Kt's personality into this; she wants to be a model and models model these brands. I used mostly white colored papers so that the face drawn would be seen; to make it more colorful, I glued an eye and a pair of lips to the face. I wanted it to look weird, and I wanted the portrait to look as if it was uncompleted—It's supposed to be a sketch not yet brought to real life and finished.

I'm most proud of the portrait. The project itself is a little bulky because under the surface are a bunch of overlapped magazine and printer papers. Drawing the portrait was hard since the papers were not all facing the same way; if too hasty, some of the papers would've ripped. I had to take my time, and I'm proud of the way it looks. My favorite part, however, would have to be the eye and lip part— it's weird looking but also aesthetically pleasing, and it catches the eye.

I struggled with the collage part alot. I had to start all over again because I didn't know how I wanted the layout of the collage to be. I wouldn't make it more colorful though because I wanted it to look like a sketch unfinished, but I would want to make the collage more complex.

So for this project, I decided to do a self portrait of myself using materials such as tin foil, plastic from a shoe box, cut up pieces from a paper bag, and pieces of a paper towel. I drew this portrait at first using a pencil and then traced over the pencil marks with a pen. I drew the values in this portrait by using the cross hatching technique with my pen to draw the lighter and darker values. I think one thing that I successfully in this piece was drawing in the values and identifying which areas were lighter values and darker values. I think that I was able to identify which areas of my face had darker value in the photos and which areas had lighter values. One thing that I would change with this piece would be the placement of the materials. I felt like the materials didn’t mesh well with the drawing as I hoped it would be.

I think the general composition of the piece looks nice; the portrait of my niece comes off as the center of attention-as she's intended-and a majority of her proportions came out great as well. Things I wasn't fond of would be how the soft materials (tissue; paper towel) would absorb the ink from the pen and markers. Some details came out a bit like blotches or bled stains, but it wasn't difficult to fix them up with time and carefulness. I also really dislike how the shape of her head, and her face's overall look, turned out on this. I know for sure that I'll be avoiding tissues and paper towels when it comes up to future collage pieces

For my piece, I chose to have a stag (more-so the outline of a stag) with flowers covering their antlers, sprouts that sprouted on them, flowers for eyes, and petals that fall from the bottom of their neck. One thing I really liked about this piece would be the overall composition; the colored flowers really pop out compared to the negative space around it, and the black outline of the stag (whatever isn't covered in flowers or sprouts) helps with identifying what the piece is supposed to represent. One thing I'm not too proud of would be the petals. I feel like they don't look 100% like flower petals, and they could've been improved on to represent a certain flower rather than looking the way they do now.

I drew a girl trapped in a goldfish water bag. I tried to portray juxtaposition by leaving the fish outside, and keeping the girl inside the water. To show negative space, the water and the girl are the only colored drawing in the piece; the water also flows out of the bag and into the black background. Negative space can also be seen in the fish: it's fins, face, eyes, and scales.

I think that watercolor aspect of the painting came out really well. I used pointillism as a technique in my watercoloring. The girl also came out really well; I'm really happy with the hands. As for something that could've been better, the top part of the art piece could use some work. I didn't know what to do with the empty space. In the end, I decided that the only color would be within the bag.

For my project, I drew a pair of hand drag down the white fabric cover, and revealing the color that is hidden underneath, and contaminate the part of the hand that touch the background color. By juxtapositing the white cover and color background, shows the negative space. I think the cross hatching and the watercolor of hand come out well individually, but I could do better at blending them together, make it looks more natural, and also done better at the watercolor background to make it smoother.

One thing I wish I did better was adding more color to the background

For my negative space project I decided to go with a pregnancy women’s belly. The concept of my project is that when the baby is making in her mothers belly it’s safe and everything is all good and pretty. The butterflies represent the baby. Once the baby leaves the belly It’s taking all the good with it and starting its life on a clean slate with everything it’s mother taught it. I used colored pencil to have the drawing appear neater.

For my negative space project, I drew and painted a human face with shapes and edges on the sides of its head as well as cut a hand shaped cut out on the bottom of the paper. The human face is painted with black and red paint with the black paint being the general space while the red paint is the negative space. There are two types of negative space in this project, the hand cut out on the bottom of the paper is negative space and the red painted areas in the painting are negative space. I think one thing I did well here was finding ways to create negative spaces in the project. One thing that I do need to fix would be to make the work look neater than it was

For my negative space project i decided to draw a woman as the main focal point. And within her hair i included another face but of a man. the placement and connection between the two people i drew represent remembering a lost love one.
One thing I like about my project is that i think the side profile look pretty realistic. Side profiles were never my strong suit in drawing so I like that i can see my own growth
One thing i think i could have done better is creating a clearer example of negative space. I think i may have added too much detail to fit the simplicity to come with negative space art. I also could have added more detail into her chest area.

My negative space project is a landscape of a wildfire made with a black ink brush, watercolor, pencils, prismacolor marker, and white acrylic for the stars. The negative space element is the gap in between the three plumes of smoke. The inspiration behind the project was to symbolize the fact that in destruction is an opportunity for creation-hence the silhouettes of flowers made by the plumes of smoke. I think if I had the chance I’d prefer to redo the smoke with charcoal as the texture would better resemble smoke. The transition between the smoke and the fire is a little high in contrast. As for things I like about my piece, I like how the smoke turned out considering what it was especially near the top.

One thing i struggled with was the eyes on my drawing.
