He began as a rough shipper and ran his own fleet of ships for ferry and cargo use. In the 1850's he sold all of his boats to invest towards the growing railroad business. Here he was able to increase his wealth exponentially by controlling a large share of the railroads. By the time of his death on January 4th, 1877, he was the 8th richest man in the modern era.

He was born from a wealthy family and quickly focused towards the oil industry, where he bought his first refinery. Soon he was able to monopolize the oil industry with his Standard Oil Company. His high prices and market control led to the Antitrust Act being passed in 1890, which attempted to limit his power. However, this did not stop him from becoming the second most wealthy man of the Modern Era. He passed away in Ormond Beach, Florida on May 23rd, 1937, at the age of 92
