Go through activity as a class. At the end the students get a hand out for their evaluation. Students cut out images and decide if they are branded characters or cartoon characters.
Overall Rating: 4/5 We like that it shows different types of ads and brands, but it is focused on images only.

Batoul, Brittany, Sara, Mitra

Grades: 2 - 6
Resource type: lesson plan
Topic: stereotypes in TV

Description: familiarizes students with stereotypes and helps them understand how stereotypes are portrayed on television, e.g., bully, villain, cop. Characters stereotyped because of their age, sex, culture, job, etc.
Students to watch television show videos, identify, draw and describe different character stereotypes.

Rating - the lesson plan needs to be updated for students of this generation (included a picture of Jennifer Aniston, who young kids may not recognize). Lesson also asks kids to watch videos from T.V. shows --> replace with YouTube videos / Netflix shows for the current times.
The lesson plan also does not include ways to differentiate instruction for kids at different literacy levels, so this would be something the teacher has to do.

Idea is to show students that what you see in media can be deceptive. This activity shows students a video frame by frame and ask students if they think this is real. The end of the video shows students that these videos were made to show how easy it is to be fooled by media images.
Grade level(s): K-2
Resource Type: Lesson Plan and Activities
Media Type: Video and Images
Overall Rating of this Resource: 4.5/5 Overall think this is a very relevant topic and it has all the information for a lesson contained, including follow up activities. Also teaches students valuable lessons on looking at the bigger picture. Skills used in this lesson can be used and applied to their own lives. As a group we decided to really know how good this resource is we would have to try it with a class.
Resource link: https://mediasmarts.ca/sites/default/files/lesson-plans/lesson_break_the_fake_whats_in_the_frame.pdf

Then show a slide show with pictures of behind the scene makings. Get the kids to make their own fake commercial using their phones and puppet, then compare their video with the pictures of the behind the scene making and discuss how we can digitally alter things with a large budget to look very real.

4 out of 5.
