Belize was a mayan civilization from AD 300 to 1200 BC. In 1502 they had European contact, when coloumbus sailed on the east coast. English settlements were established when a pair of shipwrecked english seamen landed in 1683. Both Bristih and Spain fought over the land until the British finally defeated them in 1798. In 1840 it was known as British Honduras. Self-government wasn't granted until Jan. 1964. And in 1973 the coutry's name was changed to Belize.

Something interesting I found that Belize is slightly smaller than Massachusetts. Some of it's natural resources include, timber, fish, and hydropower. it's the only country in South America without a coastline on the North Pacific Ocean.
