Women’s work, in the context of fishing economics, has long remained ignored due to male guardianship over their commercial activity. Legally, women were not free to establish businesses; their occupation in most cases appeared under the name of their father or husband. This explains why their important role has scarcely left a trace in written public and private records in Galicia, Spain. Through some rare fiscal and accounting documents, recorded oral testimonies, photographs and videos, the work of female net makers (the ‘redeiras’) is articulated in the narrative of the Museo Marea exhibition. This local history cultural centre has also carried out research in two other important areas: the role of women in the production of salted sardines outside the domestic sphere, and their evolving role in the fish retailing business. The expanding salting industry of the nineteenth century sought to employ women for their cheap skilled labour, which led to a surge in the employment of women in this sector and in that of the later fish canning business.

Women’s selling activity initially entailed the exchange of scanty fish and shellfish for agricultural produce; however, with time they were gradually able to obtain a public licence to independently operate in provincial and national fish supply markets.

Their job consist in repairing fishing nets, for diferent reassons. Breaks must be corrected quickly, as boats go fishing frequently.
This job was recognized as Galician cultural heritage by XUNTA de GALICIA in 2015.

The art of dry stone walling concerns the knowhow related to making stone constructions by stacking stones upon each other, without using any other materials except sometimes dry soil. Dry stone structures are spread across most rural areas – mainly in steep terrains – both inside and outside inhabited spaces, though they are not unknown in urban areas. The stability of the structures is ensured through the careful selection and placement of the stones, and dry-stone structures have shaped numerous, diverse landscapes, forming various modes of dwelling, farming and husbandry. Such structures testify to the methods and practices used by people from prehistory to today to organize their living and working space by optimizing local natural and human resources.

The main feature of the Fallas Festivity, a tradition of communities in Valencia and its diaspora celebrating the coming of spring, is the giant falla. The falla is a monument made up of ninots (caricature pieces) created by local artists and craftspeople that provides a commentary on current social issues. Erected in the town square, the falla is set alight at the end of the festivity, which runs from March 14 to 19, to symbolize the coming of spring, purification and a rejuvenation of community social activity. In the meantime, marching bands parade the streets, outdoor meals are held and fireworks staged. Each year, a Fallas Queen is elected to promote the festivity throughout the year encouraging locals and visitors to take part. Know-how associated with the practice is transmitted within families, particularly those involved in the construction of the ninots who belong to different guilds among participating communities. The Fallas Festivity provides an opportunity for collective creativity and the safeguarding of traditional arts and crafts. It is also a source of community pride, contributor to cultural identity and enhances social cohesion. In the past, the festivity was also a way of preserving the Valencian language when it was prohibited. Inscribed in the list of intangible heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2016.

The Kalamata scarf has a rich history and symbolizes the local tradition and culture of our region. For this reason, I believe that it is important to keep it in the culture of our country. Nowadays, the scarf is used in traditional dances, such as in the chamiko dance, to facilitate the first dancer in the figures. But in the past, its use in dances was not only common, but for women it was also mandatory. It was imposed by reasons of honor, as it was morally impermissible for a man to hold a girl's bare hand.

The cultural heritage of our great leader, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of our state, was preserved and passed on to future generations. Beyond his political and military abilities, Atatürk is a genius who writes history, studies history, believes in science, is passionate about archaeology, founded a museum, and is interested in the preservation and restoration of architectural structures and the preservation of culture. In addition, the thoughts and productions that this genius achieved, together with his comrades, during the period from the independence of the country and the establishment of our republic until his death, have become cultural units that will be taken care of by future generations with all their values and transcending the borders of the country.

The founders of Büyükçekmece, where the first settlement started in the 7th century BC, were Helens. Büyükçekmece, which came under Byzantine rule in the 2nd century BC, was known as Athyra.

After the Hellenes, Atilla, the Great Hun Emperor, passed through Çatalca with his army in 447 AD, entered Büyükçekmece and imposed a tax on the Byzantium and went back. Avar Turks came to Istanbul via Çatalca in 616, and Bulgarians in 813 under the command of Kurum Han. In 1090, the Pechenegs reached Büyükçekmece.

Turks settled in the Byzantine delta in 1357, but the Çekmece region continued to live under Byzantine rule for a long time.

Büyükçekmece, which was connected to the Ottoman Empire after the conquest of Istanbul, was a summer and agricultural town, and there was no dense settlement in the region because it was a place for armies during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Especially after the 1829 Ottoman-Russian war, a large number of Turkish immigrants settled in Büyükçekmece, which was used as a hunting and wintering place during the Ottoman period.

Büyükçekmece, which was connected to Çatalca Sanjak as a district in 1876, was turned into a sub district to Çatalca in 1926 with the declaration of Çatalca as a district. Büyükçekmece, which was declared a municipality in 1958, left Çatalca district in 1987 and became an independent district.

Büyükçekmece has been a transit and accommodation point for armies and passengers in both Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Artifacts such as caravanserais, inns and Mimar Sinan's famous bridge, some of which have survived to the present day, some of which are ruins and traces have already disappeared, are important signs of being a passage.

Evliya Çelebi writes that Büyükçekmece was a sub-district of Eyüp Kadilik in the 17th century, it had a ruined castle by the sea, about a thousand flourishing houses, vineyards, and the lands of the town were foundation lands. He mentions the districts imaret, madrasah, developed bazaar, 11 inns, baths and caravanserais.

Today, Büyükçekmece is taking firm steps towards becoming a world city with its evolving face, although it preserves its characteristic as a passage or bridge of the past. The heritage and values left to us by history are preserved in harmony in the Culture Park planned on the shores of Büyükçekmece Lake.
