Second week of "First Step Korean"

1. Name: Nur Arina Amira Binti Harizal
Matric number: A173739
Date: 31/7/2022

2. How is your progress?
In the second week of learning Korean language, I have learned on how to greet and introduce myself. Mainly, I was taught on how to do greetings such as saying 'hello', 'nice to meet you', 'goodbye', 'may you go/stay in peace'. Other than that, I learned on how to ask and introduce my name, nationality and occupation. I also learned that Korean language has some form of honorifics in their conversation according to ages and social status level.

3. Points to remember from week 2
First, I need to take note on how this honorifics usage in the Korean language works. It is part of Korean culture to use the correct honorifics when talking, so it is important to grasp this correctly when talking Korean language, or else it might sound rude to others especially to local Koreans. For example, the way a teenager say 'hello' to their friends are different when it comes to elderlies and vice versa.

Second point to remember is on how to end the pronouns in sentences such as, if the pronouns ends with consonant, then we have to add the sound of "--ee", but if the pronouns ends with vowels, then there is no need to ends with "--ee".

4. Your feelings and thoughts
I feel more relaxed and confidence in reading Hangul after the second week learning. Perhaps because now I am already learning Korean language to an advanced level, which is to make a sentences, so now reading Hangul become much easier for me.

5. One good thing from what you did that you can practice now?
One good thing is, now I am able to understand more on the honorifics usage in Korean language. Actually, before learning this second phase, I already can understand the sentences given because I did watch a lots of Korean dramas. However, I still did not fully understand on how to address the honorifics when talking, so now that I have learned, it is such an accomplishment for me.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
One thing that I think is difficult is the vocabulary. I think when learning a new language, the vocabulary is quite the hustle though as all I have to do is remember them. I did remember a few of the occupations and countries names but some of them I did forget as the words themselves are difficult to pronounce. While learning, I did try to remember the vocabulary especially on the occupations.

I think the ways to master the vocabulary is to read Korean dictionary, or perhaps the fun way is to watch Korean dramas or movies and take note of the sentences and try to understand them.

7. Your plan for next week?
I did have take a look on what I will be encountering for the next week, and it will be on how to have a conversation about family members. It will also consists of videos, reading materials and quizzes. Thus I will continue the journey of learning Korean as planned in the learning objectives.

What have you done?

I was able to ask someone "what time is it now?" during my second week because I had learnt how to count numbers from 1 to 100. What do you want to eat or drink? is another question I learned how to ask people. Additionally, I can respond to someone if they ask me the same questions because I am familiar with a few dishes and beverages that Chinese people frequently order.

3. Points to remember from Week 2

Malay and Mandarin have very similar ways of counting. For instance, in Malay, "22 is dua puluh dua," where in Mandarin "2 is èr," "10 is shí," and "22 is èrshí èr." Therefore, time in Mandarin is "diăn". As an example, 1 o’clock is "yī diăn." However, every measurement word with number 2 is spelled liăng rather than èr, where 2 o'clock is spelled "liăng diăn" rather than "èr diăn."

4. Your feelings and thoughts

I've just realised that I should have started learning this language much earlier, but it's still not too late. This language is so exciting and fascinating that I enjoy learning it. I'm now looking for fresh words and ideas that we may utilise in conversation on a daily basis.

5. One good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

Since counting in Mandarin is much simpler than I had previously believed, I now use Mandarin terms to speak with my family. Not only that, if I eat my meals outside, I can now order in Mandarin, which excites me.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

The issue is the pronunciation of the words, as I said in my previous report. I'm still using the same strategy to get through the challenge, which involves listening repeatedly, repeating what I hear, and practising with a Chinese friend.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3).

I'll learn about colours, common phrases for shopping, and how to define locations close to my residence.

I watched the videos that explained all the rules and how to pronounce certain words. Then, I proceed to answer some quizzes and do some exercises to further enhance my understanding.

3. Points to remember from week 2!

Mandarin sentence structure is quite different from English. For example in English, it is written ‘6 in the morning’ while in Mandarin it is written as ‘Zaoshang Liu dian’ which means ‘In the morning 6’

4. Your feelings & thoughts

I feel excited every time I learnt some new phrases. I always thought Mandarin is a wonderful language but an arduous task to master. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now!

I can describe my daily life in Mandarin now and it’s really fun since it makes me watch kid’s channels in Mandarin now. How did you cope?

Since Mandarin sentence structure is quite different from English or Malay, it makes me a bit confused every time I try to speak in Mandarin. How is your progress?
In the second week, I learned on how to describe numbers, time, period from early morning to evening, some daily actions like working, sleeping or having a breakfast and lastly, food. For example, common Chinese food, drinks and fruits.

3. Points to remember from Week 2.
Firstly is the numbers. For example, '3' in Mandarin is 'san' while '13' is 'shi san'. Secondly is time. 'Dian' is a measure word in Chinese. Similar with the numbers, '3 o'clock' is 'san dian' but it is different with '2 o'clock' which is 'liang dian' instead of 'er dian'. Thirdly is period. Morning are divided into 2 which are early morning called as 'zao shang'. It can be used from 6am to 8am whereas morning as 'shang wu' from 9am to 11am. Some common Chinese food I learned are 'noodles' in mandarin is called as 'chaomian' while 'dumpling' is called as 'jiaozi'.

4. Your feelings and thoughts
For me, it is much easier to learn time and numbers as I had already remember and familiar with the words. For other terms like period and food, it took quite some time to remember. Despite having difficulties to remember those terms, I am excited whenever I find new words.

5. One good thing from what you did that you can practice now
I can slowly practice Mandarin by conversing with my sister and my Chinese friends.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
I find it difficult to make a sentence whether to question or answer it. I tend to think the word in English or Malay and then translate it to Mandarin followed by reorganizing the words in sentence and then I will speak it loud. I think the best way to cope is by always practicing and never give up.

7. How is your progress?
Week 2 has taught me how to ask and answer questions regarding the ways to do it. It seems although I'm already in the second week of learning proper Korean Language, I still struggled for quite some time learning this one specific grammar. Otherwise, this week's classes were easy to follow.

3. Points to remember from week 2?
It's no different than last week because some verbs or nouns have final consonant at stem. The term 밖에 must always be followed by negative statements such as 안, 못, 모르다, 없다. Adjectives or verbs that have final consonant will use -으면조겠다 [먹다 -> 먹으면 종겠어]while the ones without the final consonant will use -면조겠다 [보다 -> 보면 좋겠어]

4. Your feelings and thoughts.
This week seems more chill as the topics learned were what I have heard before during my own time studying the Korean Language. It's easier to follow along to the professors when reading a scenario. It was a great feeling of achievement whenever my answer was similar to the ones in the video.

5. ONE good thing from what you did that you can practice now.
It makes it easier for me to type and write faster in Korean as the exercises provided required me to write down the answers.

6. Any difficulties/concern? How did you cope?
I find it difficult to create a proper sentence without any prompts as I still lack other simple vocabulary that I'm not aware off. It helps when I use an online English-Korean dictionary, sometimes Google translate.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)
The plan for week 3 is to learn phrases in Korean on how to be considerate and handle mistakes.

1. Joey Lim Siang En A174112
31 July 2022

2. So far I've learnt quite some barre chords and the pentatonic scales relating to the shape of the chords. Been practicing the variations and using the notes in songs.

3. Barre chords are actually open chords depending on which shape I will be playing, with a higher fret position to change the key of it. The same applies to the scale on that particular key.

4. I feel that playing barre chords is not easy because it requires a lot of finger strength, and the transition between chords is a bit difficult. However, I managed to master the transition so far with a lot of practices. I find it very interesting and I can't wait to master the fundamentals of everything.

5. I managed to master the barre chords variation through at least 1 hour of practice every-day. Now I'm able to apply the chords on songs and I learnt how to transit between the chords.

6. The hard part of learning barre chords is not having enough finger strength to barre the frets. My hand kept getting cramped up when I apply too much force to the frets. I overcame it by tilting the angle of my finger, so that the bony part of it it closer to the frets divider, and managed to build some strength from here.

7. My plan for week 3 is to apply the chords and scales I've learnt the past weeks to start learning how it is being applied in songs arranged by musicians. I plan to start learning the fingerstyle of River flows in you and kiss the rain song.

I managed to cover up all topics and successfully answered all the quizzes with average score of 85%.

3. Points to remember from Week 2 ?
There is a definite line on how Korean people talk and greet each other in a very polite way. However, in term of speaking, the vocabularies are much more easier to learn, pronounce and practice. There are also a very wide range of vocabularies such as occupation, country, and different ways of greetings. Your feelings and thoughts.
I felt that this week was a little harder compare to last week as the previous week was nothing but a mere introduction of the guitar to me. I was disappointed in the beginning as I felt that maybe this course was too much for me. However, as i started playing the chords repeatedly, I eventually managed to mastered them.

5. I've worked as a cashier before but I would say this is the cashier machine that is a bit hard to learn so far. The cashier machine here is a cashless machine and only 2 stalls at the foodstore accepts cash. I learned how to enter the vouchers when there is any given by the customers, enter the promo code for the staffs working there and also manage the receipts accordingly based on the payment method. It was quite challenging at first but after practicing using it for a few days, I managed to handle it without the help of the supervisor there.

3. Points to remember from Week 2
Welcome the customers with a smile and greet them properly. Speak clearly to the customers so that there will not be any mistakes in the orders. Reconfirm their order with the customers and always ask them is there anything else they would like to add on. Handle the money properly and be alert of their payment method.

4. Your feelings and thoughts
At first, I was nervous handling the cashier alone because I was not that familiar with the menus and also the cashier system. However, with the help of the supervisor and the staffs there, slowly I could remember how the system works and managed it on my own. I enjoyed handling the cashier on my own after a few days of learning it.

5. ONE good thing from what you did and can practice it now
I learned to always ask from others if there is anything that I'm confused about because eventually I'll learn about it and not worrying of making the same mistakes again.

6. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope ?
I had a slight difficulty in handling the cashier machine at the beginning such as I kept on forgetting to key in the tag number, and didn't know how to void when there is any wrong orders. At the end of week 2, I already know how to handle it well and could even manage the crowds during peak hours.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 3)
For the next 2 weeks, I'll be assigned to be in the kitchen as a kitchen helper. I'm quite nervous about it as I won't usually helps my mum in the kitchen but at the same time I'm excited to learn from the chefs there.
