was born on May 9, 1860 in the village of Kirriemuir in Forfarchire, Scotland.
His father, David Barrie was a spinner and his mother, Margaret, the daughter of a bricklayer. They had ten children, James Barrie was the ninth. Since he was a child, he had heard his mother tell them stories about pirates and was fascinated.
But a tragedy struck the Barrie family during James' childhood. He was seven when his older brother, David, died in a skating accident. After the tragedy, James's mother fell into deep depression.
James Barrie tried to catch the attention of his mother by dressing in the clothes of his deceased brother.
Barrie left her home in the village at the age of thirteen to study. At school he was always interested in theater and literature. He was considered strange by his colleagues, because his interests were different, while his colleagues only thought of dating girls, he lived with books. Barrie was also joking for being short.
Barrie studied at the Dumfries Academy and at the University of Edinburgh. After working as a journalist for the Nottingham Journal, he moved in 1885 to London as a freelance writer.
He managed to sell his mostly humorous works to magazines of the time.
Better Dead (1888), was his mystery novel, in which he satirized well-known people.
His fame came with the play: "Auld Licht Idylls", depicting Scottish life. It was highly praised by critics.
Later, in 1891, "The Little Minister" his melodramatic piece, was filmed after being presented in the theater reaching great success.
In 1894, Barrie married Mary Ansell, actress of one of his plays.
Barrie became known in England and the United States, for his theatrical works, some became films. But the play that made him world-wide was the play that became a classic of children's literature: "Peter Pan."

His most famous book

The name of Peter Pan first appeared in Barrie's adult novel "The Little White Bird." The play is a first-person narration, about the bond between a wealthy bachelor and a little boy, David. Taking the boy for a walk in Kensington Gardens the narrator tells him about Peter Pan, which could be found in the Gardens at night.
In 1904, Peter Pan was staged for the first time. It was the story of a boy who lived in Neverland, would be a child forever and still fight against pirates.
Barrie began writing the story after meeting the brothers Llewellyn Davies and their mother, the widow Sylvia. Barrie's friendship with the Davies family was inspiring and important to all.
Sylvia, Barrie and the children had from the beginning a great affinity, a fact that gave rise to gossip and the end of Barrie's marriage.
Barrie's biographers wrote that such friendship was central to his life. His romance with Sylvia seems never to have materialized, often he was like a sixth child.
When Sylvia passed away, Barrie took custody of her children, sharing the same with the children's grandmother.
Peter Pan only won a definitive print version in 1911 entitled "Peter Pan and Wendy".
In 1922, Barrie received the title of Baron. He always liked to tell and stage Peter Pan for the children.
On June 19, 1937 Barrie died of pneumonia.
Peter Pan must have a lot of Barrie, the children Llewellyn Davies and also a lot of us all, that maybe, whatever makes this story so lovely.
