In these two chapters, Doctor Thorne learns that his niece's other uncle, Roger Scatcherd, has made him the executor of his estate. Inside of his will he has stipulated that if something should happen to his son, his only heir, then the bulk of his estate, which includes $200K, will go to his sister's first born child, which just so happens to be Doctor Thorne's niece Mary. Doctor Thorne spends the bulk of the remaining chapters going back and forth debating on whether he should tell Roger about this development.

The way Trollope continues to add dimension to the story through multiple plot lines always impresses me, but this one in particular I was surprised by. I knew that Mary would need to inherit in some way so that she could be with her obvious future man, Frank Gresham the younger, but I truly did not know how it was going to happen. I am curious to know if Roger Scatcherd, her unknown uncle, will come to be known to her or if he will die before she or Doctor Thorne can make him aware of the situation.

This book is a then vs now. The prologue explains that Macy lost her mother to cancer at the age of ten. The book starts in present day as the first chapter with Macy is in a coffee shop with Sabrina, her best friend. Then a man, Elliot, from her past that she hasn't seen in 10 years walks into the coffee shop. The next chapter jumps back to fifteen years ago, to when her father bought a cabin house, to be a little getaway from the real world, she met Elliot in her closet. He would go into the abandon house to read in that closet. Macy was moving into that house and he was in her closet they talked and became friends that day.

The first chapter now explains nothing really about the mystery man she is scared of and is confusing but once you get to the next chapter about meeting him 15 years ago in that weird way of him being in her closet. I thought it was kinda weird and strange but nothing I have read before.

The book jumps back to the present day when Macy sees Elliot in the coffee shop she's in with Sabrina. Macy states to Sabrina that she hasn't seen Elliot since high school. Sabrina then stiffens when she looks over Macy already knows Elliot has seen her. Macy hears her old nickname she waves back and then bolts out the door. She jogs down the sidewalk in the wrong direction she needs to be going then turns around and runs right into Elliot's chest forced to talk to him now. They have a short conversation catching up after 10 years on the sidewalk, Elliot asks about her dad and Macy states her dad died then she leaves for work.

fifteen years ago Macy and her dad spent holiday at their cabin. She and Elliot read in her closet/ book room, they read for most of the time but Elliot is an curious kid and he would often ask questions about Macy's mom and Macy wouldn't know how to answer and they'd go back to reading. Jumping to the next section to present day. Macy is confused on what to do because Sean, her finance and phoebe his daughter is her life now but she cant stop thinking about seeing Elliot, her past, she runs out the door for work to avoid Sean. She gets to work early and outside her job is Elliot. They go get coffee before her shift and they talk but Macy is still very closed off not telling Elliot everything. Elliot went home and broke up with his girlfriend the night before after seeing Macy again this shocks her and tells him she's getting married.

I was shocked Elliot went through all the trouble to figure out Macy schedule to see her the very next day. I thought it was very sweet and had a lot of effort. I also think Elliot going right home and breaking up with his girlfriend was kinda of extreme even Macy did to but he explained Macy is the love of his life and after finding her again he couldn't pretend with someone else. That was extremely cute and sweet. I just dont get why Macy is still being really closed off with him sowhat happen in the past?

Going back years before the author tells the reader of when Elliot and Macy had a conversation about Elliot's love for seal watching at the beach an hour away, he wanted Macy to see for herself. Macy, Elliot, and Macy's dad then take a trip to that beach to watch the seals. Elliot was extremely nervous around Macy's dad that day. Chapter seven jumps back to the present day When Macy is on a train home sleeping after her shift, Sabrina calls her and it wakes up Macy. Macy tells Sabrina what happens between her and Elliot. Sabrina is on Elliot's side about him dumping his girlfriend just after seeing Macy again after 15 years. Macy finds it crazy.

The day trip to go see the seals is extremely cute besides the dad being along with them I find that a bit funny but still cute. I agree with Macy though Elliot dumping his girlfriend so fast is a bit extreme but if he only felt something true with Macy his whole life why waste time with another woman.

"I'm not sure Elliot and I could just be friends" Macy states this on the phone with Sabrina. I believe it's portraying the future because it's inevitable that Macy and Elliot are going to end up back together at the end of the book because they can't just be friends after they're past.
