Period 2 - Dwelling Discussion by Shannon Tuttle

Click the Plus button on the right bottom to submit a response. In The Giver, they refer to their house as a "dwelling" only. Explain why you think this might be. Think about why calling your "dwelling" a home would be changed for sameness in this community.

I think that in The Giver they call their home a dwelling because calling your house a home is like how you make it feel and how you personalize it and it is theirs. If you were to call it a dwelling it would be the same to everyone else, creating the sameness they want in the community. Also, they would not want someone to have a nicer house than one another because a law is no boasting, so they all have a similar dwelling. Also, if they have a designated place to live it really would not be their home, it would just be a place to live, a dwelling.

I think that the people of Jonas' community call their homes a dwelling because it's the same for everybody. It's not a small apartment or a huge mansion. The whole concept of their society is sameness and one of their rules is, no boasting. If somebody had a huge, big, castle-like mansion when someone else lived in a small hut, people could compare themselves to the person who has better than them. A dwelling is just a dwelling, and nothing is different or unique about it. This way, the citizens don't feel uncomfortable or inferior about the fact that there is someone who has better than them. In the minds of the rulers, this is creating peace.

I think that the people in Jonas's community commonly refer to their houses as dwellings because the people in this community value sameness. To call your house "your home" is personalizing it and making it "your" home. If you call it "a dwelling" it does not have the "your" in it and is then more if an object than a valuable possession. Also, it seems in this community, citizens do not experience complex emotions (sentimentality, grief, etc.) and if the houses are more of "your" house than "a" house then the people may start to feel complex emotions towards the house.
