Benefits of Alternative Assessment

1. Allows students an opportunity to express their understanding by giving them a more appropriate way of showing their learning
2. Needed to identify gaps in a students second language; serves as a tool to better decide which language skills to focus on
3. Students may respond different to different types of assessment, thus variation is important and more than one method is key. For example, students in certain cultures may not contribute as much to a group discussion; if the focus for the assessment is group participation, these students may not be as successful even though they may have a lot to add to the discussion.

1. Interviews: I have used this many times with students; most ELL students I have worked with feel comfortable talking one-on-one to the teacher as they feel safe to say what they think and feel. This takes the pressure off the writing aspect by focusing strictly on oral language to explain their answers. It also gives them time and I assist them in finding the words when they may not have been able to.

2. Picture Depictions: Another way to assess learning is to have the student draw images of what they think is the answer; some ELL students may not be able to come up with the correct vocabulary but pictures are fairly universal and can portray what they mean in a visual form; they can add few words to this if need be to add to their description. Images can also be provided to them and they can pull the correct one when asked the questions, depending on what they are being assessed for.

1. Google Docs: There are several digital tools that I think are useful but I chose Google Docs because it is one that we have used quite a bit at our school. The grade 3/4s are creating several google doc presentations on a variety of topics (animals, Explorers, nutrition, etc.) I think once students are taught all the different features (many of which they seem to discover on their own) they love using it to showcase their work. There are so many visually pleasing features that make their information come to life and students really love to present them to their classmates.
