GUPAP will use the following approach to reach 500 women agripreneurs from June 2021 -May 2022:
1-Conduct a participatory rapid needs assessment to better evaluate the exact needs for each enterprise, in addition to assessing potential survivors’ community-led responses in most vulnerable, remote and damaged agricultural communities of Gaza Strip.

2-Enhance resilience of damaged or affected women-led enterprises through Cash for Resilience mechanism. Each woman will receive an in-kind grant (for purchasing production inputs to restore their production capacity), this will be also an important entry point to enhance resilience of family farming livelihoods and resilience of local food system as well.

3-Enhance and support 25 Survivors’ Community-Led Responses in most vulnerable, remote and damaged agricultural communities in crisis, in cooperation with already existed Community Based Organizations and relevant local committees. GUPAP will use SCLR and Participatory Action & Learning in Crisis (PALC) approaches

Democratic Confederalism

Andrea Wolf Institute is a part of the Women’s Movement in North and East Syria. Since the beginning of the Revolution in 2012, people are building a Self-Administration, inspired by the paradigm of Democratic Confederalism. Democratic Confederalism is based on the main pillars of women’s liberation, direct democracy and ecology. A self-administration by the people means not relying on the State, but organizing all aspects of life from the grassroots. In this sense, in terms of decision-making, we have communes that reach the families and all houses in the villages and councils that act on a wider scale. In other areas, like health, justice, education and such there are commissions formed by civil society people that look after that the real needs are being met. In terms of economy, people’s cooperatives are also part of the Self-Administration. Women’s liberation is a crucial part: in every city and bigger villages women are socially organized as Kongra Star (Kurdish for ‘Star Congress’, ‘star’ symbolizes women’s strength).

In the sense of taking the organizing of all aspects in life back in the hands of society, Jineolojî proposes a new perspective to science and knowledge. Popular education, research on women’s history, building practical knowledge, organizing autonomously as women, gathering experiences that are the base of social transformation. Jinwar, the women’s village, is a practical example of putting jineolojî in practice. As we wrote on a separate post, all aspects of life in Jinwar are communally organized.

The idea of Democratic Confederalism is not only organizing people’s sovereignty but also defending it against the systems of domination, such as patriarchy, capitalism and colonization. And simultaneously defending the structures that are being built from the attacks of the occupying State, the Turkish State, and the Syrian regime, as well as from other occupying and genocidal forces, like Daesh.

The elements of Democratic Confederalism can be found in many different places of the world. What we find interesting about Democratic Confederalism is that is gives us a key on how to integrate the different parts of the struggle to a common strategy. Internationalism, for example, is another important element of it, because what Democratic Confederalism actually means is to unite struggles and articulate them altogether in building alternatives.

Over the last five years of Rodrigo Duterte’s presidency in the Philippines, more and more human rights defenders, activists, trade unionists, peasants, indigenous peoples, journalists, and progressive lawyers have been harassed, criminalized, disappeared, and killed by state forces with impunity. At the same time, the Duterte administration has adopted a more aggressive and systematic approach to discredit the liberals and the left. Many prominent public officials, avid Duterte supporters, and paid trolls have disseminated disinformation narratives claiming that human rights defenders are supporters of criminals and terrorists and vehicles of foreign destabilizers.

It is in this context that we at Focus on the Global South – Philippines together with Active Vista aim to co-organize the End Impunity Film and Media Lab. This project aims to develop grassroots and civil society organizations’ capacity for storytelling and media production and support their efforts in developing a communication strategy. Participants representing farmers, fisherfolk, and indigenous women and youth will go through a series of political discussions, workshops, mentorship, and guided production of a media output of their choice (can either be an advocacy video, video documentation, photo documentation, or photo essay). The hope is that by the end of the project, participants will be able to utilize the skills they gained and the outputs they produced to support their communication strategy.
