This totalitarian government boils down to it's roots, where these ideas sprung. North Korea mainly uses fear and aggression to control it's citizens, for example killing anybody who tries to escape the country, and using propaganda in it's own country. The way this government tries to make a name for itself is by it's military, North Korea's military looks very serious and strong but that's exactly what they're aiming for it to look like. Because of their total control they also can basically make their citizens do anything with force.
