Parental Neglect

The parents did not take proper care of the children and often did not feed them or buy food at all. They would let them do what they want even if it was dangerous. In The Glass Castle, "I felt a blaze of heat on my right side. I

turned to see where it was coming from and realized my dress was on fire. Frozen with fear, I watched the yellow-white flames make a ragged brown line up the pink fabric of my skirt and climb my stomach. Then the flames leaped up, reaching my face." Jeannette's mom let her cook hot dogs on the stove with no supervision. This led to her getting seriously hurt and sent to the hospital, where her father later took her out while the burns were still getting taken care of.

Coming of Age

So many things were changing for Jeannette, but back home things were still the same and possibly worse. In The Glass Castle, "I wrote Brian long letters describing the sweet life in New York City. He wrote back saying things in Welch were still going downhill. Dad was drunk all the time except when he was in jail; Mom had completely withdrawn into her own world; and Maureen was more or less living with neighbors." Jeannette was finally able to get away from her family and be on her own.

Disappointment

Jeannette's father had broken Oz to get the money and spend it on nonsense. When Jeannette found out and told Lori she was furious. In The Glass Castle, ""You bastard!" Lori shouted. "You stole our money!" "What the goddamn hell are you talking about?" Dad asked. "And watch your language." He leaned against the door and lit a cigarette. Lori held up the slashed pig and threw it as hard as she could at Dad, but it was empty and nearly weightless." Lori was angry at her dad for stealing her money and robbing her of her escape to New York.
