Fractures occur when disease, a tumor, or trauma can put stress on a bone, causing it to break. Fractures are common in the wrist, ankle, and hip. Treatment for fractures includes immobilizing the bone with a cast or even having to surgically insert metal rod to hold the bone together. The schooling, experience, and licensing required for this career are a completion of a residency in orthopedic surgery in an ACGME approved program, a current BC/BE in orthopedic surgery (American Board of Orthopedic Surgery), a valid state medical license as MD or DO, a valid DEA certificate, and 2 years’ experience working full-time as an orthopedic surgeon. The ball jammed his pinky, causing it to bend into what looked like a 90 degree angle and it was clear that something was wrong. He was taken to the doctor and most likely seen by an orthopedic specialist and surgeon. He was given a cast so that it could heal.
