Capitalism forces people to sacrifice their well being for their jobs

In order to succeed in work in the United States, and what is reflected throughout The Devil Wears Prada is the idea of sacrificing the mental health or well being of yourself for your work. In this movie, Andy faces the decision of continuing work or maintaining her relationships with her friends and boyfriend. Similarly, Miranda is forced to sacrifice her relationship with her husband because she is so committed to her work. Throughout the movie Emily is driven to an eating disorder and sickness because she is trying to conform to what Miranda wants and meet the demands of the industry, sacrificing her physical health for her job. Nigel reflects the same sacrifice, it took 18 years for him to be put in a situation where he would have autonomy over his own life but even that was taken from him by Miranda.

These ideas are reflected in United States capitalist ideals where we force minimum wage workers to work constantly and sacrifice their own well being to keep food on the table.

Money Tree

Although there is a saying that says money isn't everything, there's times in like when having the easy access and power of money can change your life in many ways. In the movie The Devil Wears Prada, it shows a big example of Money Tree when someone else was going to take her job but in order to not get her job taken Miranda had the ability to take her assistants job to give it to Jacqueline in order for Miranda to keep hers. This is a very accurate example because in life you see how people with money usually in order to keep their power they put themselves being aware if might hurt others.

Power Dynamics/Hierarchy In Companies

Miranda Priestley did anything she could to keep her position on runway, regardless of how it impacted other peoples lives. For example, she gave the job that was supposed to go to Nigel to Jacqueline in order to get rid of her as an option for Miranda's replacement. This decision destroyed Nigel, as he was really looking forward to the job and was originally Irv's first choice of partner. But when Miranda found out that she was being replaced she made sure that Irv chose Jacqueline in order to get rid of her. This is a problem with companies that is reflected today. They become somewhat like a hierarchy and those who are already at the top have the influence to stay at the top, using their influence and power to keep their position.
